Glamping Mountain Fairy Tale – the name tells you much of what you need to know about this site in northern Slovenia. First of all, there will be no roughing it here: this is glamping of the highest order, in exceptionally appointed cabins with some pretty awesome perks (more on those in a minute). Second, you’re in a splendid Alpine setting: the site is on the outskirts of the town of Tržič (five minutes’ drive, or a 20-minute walk), in a valley carved by the river Tržič Bistrica. And finally, for the ‘fairy tale’ part… well, that can be whatever your heart desires, whether hiking along forested mountain trails, taking in splendid views of lush peaks or (and here comes one of those excellent glamping perks) relaxing in your own private outdoor wooden hot tub. The site is arranged according to the principles of feng shui, and therefore designed to enhance feelings of well-being. This self-care vibe continues in your cabin (built of wood and other sustainable materials), which comes with large panoramic windows (and spectacular mountain views), a kitchenette and bathroom, plus heating and air conditioning for year-round comfort. For hard-core pampering, it’s also possible to book a Finnish sauna or arrange a massage. Young guests are catered for with a play area; in the summer months, access to the nearby municipal outdoor pool (five minutes’ walk) is included in the price of the accommodation. Bikes are also available for hire to explore the surrounding area on two wheels, or you can take the family dog on long walks along the river or through the forest.

Local attractions

Entrance to the Tržič Museum (five minutes’ drive) is included in the price of your accommodation. The collections are exhibited in several buildings, each focusing on one important aspect of local history – from the town’s shoemaking heritage, to skiing. Another museum unit is dedicated to World War II and the Ljubelj concentration camp. Check out the atmospheric ruins of Grad Kamen (15 minutes), a hilltop 12th-century castle within a lush forested setting. From there, hike the Lamberg Trail (named after the former castle owners), which takes you past Ice Age caves and a mysterious fortress (Devil’s Castle, or Hudičev grad) carved out of the rock. Slovenia’s buzzing capital Ljubljana (half an hour) attracts with vast parks and gardens, such as Tivoli Park, and historic sights such as its medieval castle, where you might catch an immersive art exhibition, a puppet show or a concert, or be shown around by costumed actors.
