- Shaded pitches in a theme park five minutes’ drive from Subotica
- Palic Lake trails 15 minutes’ drive; Szeged 50 minutes
- Dog-friendly; playground; aircraft with flight simulator; launderette
In an area of northern Serbia covered with arable land and dotted with lakes, Camp Yugoland sits within a theme park dedicated to the history of the former Yugoslavia (cue statues honouring historic figures – from beloved President Tito, to inventor Nikola Tesla).
This environmentally friendly spot is on the outskirts of the city of Subotica, which you can reach by car in five minutes or in about 20 minutes by bike (which you can rent directly at the site). A 15-minute drive takes you to Palic Lake, where you can follow waterfront trails and spot assorted birdlife.
Grass and earth pitches with electric hook-up sit in the shade of tall, leafy trees, and the site comes with a decent selection of entertaining options for the whole family, such as a play area with swings, slides and climbing structures for young children (who also benefit from a kids’ club); a human-sized chessboard for the strategic thinkers in the family; and a dog park for your four-legged friend. But the highlight of the site might be the military aircraft in the middle of the forest: you and your family can take turns sitting in the cockpit and having a go at the flight simulator. A covered stage is used for live music concerts and talks.
In addition to a bathroom block (with toilets and showers large enough to accommodate wheelchair users), the site has a launderette, a kitchen and a bar where you can sip Serbian beer. Beer not your thing? Drinkable water is also available on site.

Local attractions
Close to the border with Hungary, Subotica Sands (20 minutes’ drive) is an area of great biodiversity thanks to its unusual habitat, which combines areas of forest, steppe and wetland. Saffron grows around these parts – the only suitable terrain in the whole of Serbia.
The Special Nature Reserve Ludaš Lake (20 minutes) centres on the lake of the same name. This area of wetlands is home to water buffalos, otters and turtles, as well as providing a rest for migratory birds. The shore around the lake is dotted with old farms and the occasional archaeological site.
Cross the border into Hungary and visit the city of Szeged (50 minutes), known for its splendid Art Nouveau buildings. They include Reök Palace, now home to a gallery with rotating art exhibitions; and the Unger-Mayer ház, a mansion with a turret topped by a cupola decorated with statues of women holding hands.
