If you’re longing for peace and space, Holiday Park De Toffe Peer has both in plentiful supply. Handily situated in the countryside near the secluded village of Ruinerwold in Drenthe and overlooking its own vineyard, it’s also close to three national parks and within cycling distance of Giethoorn, the ‘Venice of the North’. The campsite is situated on the Dokter Larijweg, a 7.5 kilometre-long avenue lined by pear orchards – they look wonderful when covered with blossom in spring, and in autumn the leaves turn golden. Family-centric with spacious pitches, this is an ideal base for cycling and walking adventures in flat countryside. If you wish, you can mix things up with a day of shopping and dining in the lively, canal-side towns like Meppel (10 minutes), Steenwijk (20 minutes) or Zwolle (25 minutes). Facilities for families on site include free wifi (good for keeping tabs on the kids), go-karts in the playground and a shower block with a parent and baby rooms. There’s a pond for splashing around in, and plenty of open lawns for kids to let off steam safely. And – the bliss of it – you can all help to feed the resident goats, sheep, chickens and ducks.

Local attractions

You don’t have to go far for a fun day out with the kids. Treat younger children to climbing courses and mini-tractor rides at De Drentse Koe (15 minutes’ walk) or the petting zoo and gentle carousel rides at Plopsa Indoor Coevorden. And at Wildlands (both 40 minutes), climb aboard a boat for jungle cruises past elephant and giraffe enclosures. There are more boat trips to be had in gorgeous Giethoorn (25 minutes), where you can chug down canals past thatched 13th-century farmhouses. If you’d rather be exploring on dry land, it’s a short hop to cycling and hiking trails in De Weerribben-Wieden National Park (half an hour). Two other parks are also worth a day trip: the Drents-Friese Wold (15 minutes) for cycling in woodland, while there are moorland walks in Dwingelderveld National Park (half an hour). There’s plenty of history around here too, with prehistoric dolmens at Diever (20 minutes), and you can learn about Drenthe’s role in WWII at the Herinneringscentrum Kamp Westerbork (half an hour), a memorial centre in a former transit camp.
