- Off-grid site 15 minutes’ drive from Ignalina in rural east Lithuania
- Aukštaitija National Park lakes and Palūšė both 20 minutes’ drive
- Communal firepit for cooking; wild herb workshops available
When you’re after off-grid camping in eastern Lithuania’s untamed countryside, Gėrio Ūkis may be the just place for you. This remote and peaceful retreat is set in meadows, surrounded by wild herbs and backed by conifer forests – and at 15 minutes’ drive from Ignalina in the scenic Aukštaitija region, it’s designed for anyone who wants to get back to nature, enjoy slow living and shrug off the stresses of daily life.
Aukštaitija is known for its cycling and hiking routes taking in lakes and forests as well as traditional villages. Site guests wake up to birdsong, enjoy the scent of wild plants, spend time by the pond and relax in hammocks; if you’re after late-night parties and lots of noise, this is not the place for you.
Access is via a gravel road from Joniškis village (less than five minutes’ drive), followed by a mown grass track, which may be softer after rain. Parking is available close to the pitches. Simple facilities include an outdoor compost toilet and a cold-water shower. Bring in your own drinking water, torches with a supply of batteries and suitable footwear for ground conditions.
There’s a firepit for alfresco cooking, and once you’ve arrived on site, you may be able to organise nature-based experiences such as soaking in a sauna and hot tub, or informal workshops on wild herbs, medicinal plants and their uses.

Local attractions
Gėrio Ūkis is a remote and scenic base for discovering the peaceful lakes, pine forests and traditional villages of Aukštaitija National Park (20 minutes’ drive). If you’d like to get out on the water, you can hire canoes and kayaks (half an hour) to paddle down the Būka River – listen out for woodpeckers and keep an eye open for circling raptors or storks nesting in the treetops.
Head up to Ladakalnis Viewpoint (25 minutes) for vistas over Lake Linkmenas, which you can circumnavigate on a way-marked hike. Alternatively, follow the footpath from Lake Almajas (also 25 minutes) through dense woodland to Papliaušis Spring (half an hour’s walk) to sample the pure water.
Learn about Lithuanian heritage in the village of Palūšė (20 minutes’ drive), home of a fine 18th-century wooden church (it once featured on a banknote); it is also the gateway to paddleboarding jaunts around Lake Lūšiai (half an hour). Ginučiai (20 minutes) has a well-preserved, wooden 19th-century watermill; half an hour’s walk from the village takes you to the Ginučiai and Papiliakalnė Mounds – hill forts dating back to the ninth century.
