Turn the pace of life down for a little while with a stay at Jaunmuiznieki Farm – this family-run farm in the Vidzeme region is a place that’s all about peace, privacy and the chance to take things slowly.
This is a farm, but it’s not a busy commercial one, so you won’t be surrounded by big livestock or barking dogs – there’s a collection of birds here but the main focus is on small-scale fruit and veg farming along with the production of home-made food and drinks.
Keeping things simple is part of the ethos here, so there’s no long list of guest entertainments here – just the chance to relax in a secluded location and soak up the atmosphere of the wild nature all around (perhaps best experienced with a peaceful dip in the farm’s swimming pond).
Facilities are all on hand, however – guests have access to a good range of essentials, including compost toilets, showers, a chemical disposal point, a barbecue area and a shared fridge/freezer for storing your food and drinks. Vidriži, 10 minutes’ drive away, has a supermarket and a pub; a slightly longer drive of 15 minutes gets you to Skulte for more shops, a market and a long sandy beach.

Local attractions
This is a gorgeous countryside location, and the owners recommend getting out to explore the local area on foot, by bike or kayaking along nearby rivers. If you’ve got the kids with you, you may also like to consider taking them to Rāmkalni (half an hour’s drive), an open-air amusement park with things like a toboggan run, bungee trampolines and boat hire.
For more outdoor activities, head to the trails of Gauja National Park – the country’s largest national park is packed with landscapes of cliffs, caves and springs, and has several castles and other historic monuments to check out. Turaida Castle (half an hour) is probably the best known, but places like Cēsis Castle (50 minutes) are also worth a visit. To see the scenery from above, a ride on the Sigulda cable car (35 minutes) is a must.
While this may be a countryside site, it’s not far from the coast, so pack your swimming kit or surfboard and head to the long dune-backed beaches of Skulte (15 minutes) and Saulkrasti (20 minutes).
