- Luxury dome in an olive grove 10 minutes’ drive to Polignano a Mare
- Grotte di Castellana caves 25 minutes’ drive and Bari half an hour
- Outdoor pool, fitness area and cycle hire; historic trullo on site
The spectacular coastline south of Bari (half an hour’s drive) is yours to explore when you stay at Shangri-La Glamping. This peaceful site may be surrounded by Puglia countryside, but it is also just 10 minutes’ drive from the coastal town of Polignano a Mare, dramatically set on limestone cliffs.
Accommodation at Shangri-La is in a spacious geodesic dome set in a centuries-old olive grove. Raised on decking and constructed out of eucalyptus and mahogany, its interior is packed with thoughtful touches like a double bed with an air mattress and mosquito net, plenty of storage, a kitchen corner with fridge, kettle and coffeemaker, and an ensuite bathroom with shower.
The dome also has ventilation, air conditioning and insulation, so it’s nice and cosy in all seasons. Thanks to the dome’s large windows, you can admire the site’s traditional trullo (a conical Puglian stone hut), glimpse the Adriatic Sea and witness splendid sunrises on clear mornings.
On-site facilities include an outdoor pool, chillout area, covered fitness zone and a cycle-hire service. Being on two wheels makes it easy to reach popular beaches without having to stress about parking: the rock pools at San Vito Beach and the tiny cove of Lama Monachile at Polignano a Mare are both 15 minutes away by bike.

Local attractions
So – where to go first? If you’re heading for Adriatic Sea beaches, you have the choice of several within 15 minutes’ cycle ride. There’s a lively lido at Cala Paura, while the seas at quiet Cala Paguro are calm enough for paddleboarders. You can snorkel the shoreline at teeny pebble Lama Monachile, and San Vito Beach is good for rockpooling – and if you fancy a cultural diversion, it’s backed by an impressive abbey (only open on Sundays).
Caves worth exploring along the coastline include Grotta della Cala Tre Buchi (20 minutes’ drive), where you can swim right into the cave from the beach. Turn inland to discover the dramatic limestone formations in the Grotte di Castellana complex (25 minutes), open for guided tours.
Throw a bit of local culture into the mix with a visit to the Castello Carlo V fortress and ancient harbour at Monopoli (15 minutes), or the museums, fortified castle and Romanesque cathedral in Bari (half an hour). The relics of an ancient Roman city can be seen at Scavi d’Egnazia (25 minutes), where there’s also an archaeological museum packed with finds from the archaeological dig.
