- Relaxed site in the Piedmont hills, a 40-minute drive from Alessandria
- House Museum Fausto Coppi five minutes’ drive; Gavi 35 minutes
- Dogs welcome; pool with views of the hills; bar serving local wine
Fancy a constant stream of bubbly to accompany your holiday? At La Campeggia, a family-friendly site in eastern Piedmont, a 40-minute drive from the city of Alessandria, you will have excellent access to some of the region’s top wineries, several of which produce delicious sparkling wine.
And if you just want to lounge around the pool while you’re here (there are plenty of deckchairs, plus grassy spots where to unfurl your towel), taking in views of the forested hills, don’t fret – relaxing doesn’t have to come at the expense of your boozy experience. You can still sample local wines (as well as beer and creative cocktails) at the on-site bar, or purchase a bottle at the off-licence.
La Campeggia has a café, picnic tables and a games room for when the weather turns. But until it does… those wooded hills seem to lure hikers like sirens do sailors, so lace up your boots, grab your dog (and its lead), and head towards Avolasca and Big Bench #257 (10 minutes’ drive), from where you can survey the hilly landscape. Alternatively, at the Capanne di Marcarolo natural park (an hour), you can hike or ride your mountain bike through forested trails and past clear-water lakes, spotting roe deer, wild boar and birds of prey.
Back on site, there is a toilet/shower block with a changing room where you can get ready for dinner. There’s a pizza restaurant just over 100 metres away, in the village of Costa Vescovato, and plenty more within a 10-minute drive.

Local attractions
If you’re into road bicycle racing, you should be familiar with Fausto Coppi, who won the Giro d’Italia (and the Tour de France) multiple times in the 1940s and 1950s. In Castellania (five minutes’ drive), the small village where he was born, it’s possible to visit the champion’s childhood home (House Museum Fausto Coppi) and his grave.
There are several pools at Water Park Blue Bubbles (half an hour), including one with artificial waves and one for toddlers, plus a lazy river. Waterslides range from the relatively straightforward, to windy, to the Vortex, which you ride on an inflatable.
If the name Gavi (35 minutes) sounds familiar, it’s likely because you have seen it on wine labels in your local supermarket. Besides vineyards and wineries, here you can visit the rather monumental Forte di Gavi, a military structure surrounded by star-shaped fortifications up on a hill.
