Around the site

  • Peaceful and remote woodland site in rural Campania
  • A half-hour drive to the coast and the temples of Paestum
  • Off-grid setup with kitchen, firepit, barbecue and hammocks provided
Here’s a sweet little spot for a quiet getaway in the Campania countryside – Vaccilento Camp is in a remote forest location about five minutes’ drive from the tiny village of Cicerale and well away from main roads. That isolated location makes this small site a very serene place to hang out for a few days, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere while you wander through the woods or perhaps chill out in a hammock strung between the trees. You’ll be staying right there in the woods too, so you’ll have the feeling of being completely immersed in nature – but with the addition of some handy facilities to make life a bit more comfortable. Those amenities include toilets, showers and a washing-up area as well as a comfy communal area with a kitchen (with a fridge and various pans and dishes provided), tables, benches, a firepit and a barbecue grill. As an off-grid site, it’s not lit at night so it’s a good idea to bring torches along, although there are lamps available if you need them. You’ll also have access to power outlets and power banks to charge your devices. Remote this place may be, but there are options around for day trips when you want them, including the archaeological sites at Paestum and Velia, the beach at Agropoli and several scenic nature reserves.

Local attractions

You may well find that you end up spending a fair chunk of your stay here simply hanging out on site, or perhaps just wandering along rural trails nearby. If you’d like to stretch your legs a little more, head to nature reserves like Oasi Fiume Alento (20 minutes’ drive) or Oasi Dunale Legambiente (half an hour). There are also some excellent trails in the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park (an hour), one of the largest national parks in Italy. Other outdoor activities nearby include zooming along the Cilento in Volo zipline (20 minutes) or canyoning, canoeing and wild swimming in the clear waters of the Calore Gorges (an hour). You can also explore underground at Grotte di Castelcivita (55 minutes), following either a paved tourist route or donning a hard hat for a caving adventure. Even with all of this around, if you only make one outing it should probably be to Paestum (half an hour), to see the well-preserved Greek temples and visit the archaeological museum, or to the equally excellent Velia archaeological park (40 minutes). Both are UNESCO-listed and have beaches nearby where you can cool off with a dip after your visit.
