Heading to Leipzig or Dresden and looking for somewhere handy to stay between the two? Step forward Stadrandwiese Camping on the outskirts of Chemnitz in Saxony, a handy resting place about an hour’s drive from both cities. The spacious camping meadow is surrounded by plenty of hedges and trees for privacy, and offers lots of quiet corners for all comes, including families and dog owners. At the centre of this peaceful site is a pond with a shady seating area – just the job for a relaxing picnic after a long drive. Handy facilities include electric hook-ups and drinking water taps, plus all the necessary waste disposal stations and recycling systems. There’s also a simple alfresco shower with cold water, but please note there are no hot showers on site. The close proximity to the A4 and A72 motorways means that access to the tree-shaded site is easy, but there is traffic noise when it’s raining. This little green hideaway is also next to a busy village street, so it’s best suited to overnighters rather than long-term campers.

Local attractions

If you’re keen on your social history, then Chemnitz (20 minutes’ drive) is the place for you. As its name suggests, The Industrial Museum is dedicated to the backstory of industrialisation in Saxony, with exhibits ranging from steam engines to weaving looms and supercars. You can see vintage trams at the Strassenbahnmuseum, and learn a great deal about the local area at the family-friendly State Museum of Archaeology, with its ancient Roman archaeological finds and dioramas on local wildlife. The European Capital of Culture 2025, Chemnitz sits on its namesake river and has an abundance of Socialist Realism sculptures (including one of Karl Marx) and Brutalist architecture, neatly contrasting with its 14th-century centre, which is a mash-up of baroque, Renaissance and Art Nouveau townhouses lining the market square. When you’re travelling with kids, there are deer, bison and wild boar in the Wildgatter Oberrabenstein (10 minutes), and big cats, amphibians and keeper talks at the expansive Chemnitz Zoo (15 minutes).
