  • Friendly family campsite 10 minutes' drive from the A1 motorway
  • A 25-minute drive to Compiègne or an hour and a quarter to Paris
  • On-site restaurant, plus a play area, laundry room, food shop and wifi
At this well-equipped site in the peaceful Oise countryside, guests get several châteaux for the price of one. First up, mere metres from Camping de Sorel, the Château de Sorel has splendid green gardens to explore (it's also within a short walk of Orvillers-Sorel's village amenities, which include a post office). But being situated a 10-minute drive from the A1 motorway means that you've got other castles within range too, including Compiègne and its former royal residence (25 minutes' drive), Chantilly's opulent waterside château (50 minutes) and the big daddy of fine French estates, Versailles (an hour and 15 minutes). While not pretending to be quite as palatial as any of the above, Camping de Sorel does have some lovely green surrounds, with large pitches surrounded by hedges – all in all, a decidedly smart set-up. Amenities here that are handy to have include a well-equipped kids' play area, table tennis, a laundry room, a small food shop and wifi access. There's also an on-site restaurant, La Sarrazine, where sweet crêpes, savoury galettes, salads, omelettes and deserts are on the menu. This friendly spot is run by Didier and his team, who pull out all the stops to help make your stay here run as smoothly as possible. Just drop by at reception (open between 9am and 7pm) if you have any questions.

Local attractions

It's well-known around here that the Oise area has some very good golfing spots indeed. Golf du Château d'Humières (15 minutes) is a particularly prized place to putt, but you might also like to visit the equally well-manicured grounds of the course at Château de Raray (40 minutes), roughly halfway between Camping de Sorel and Paris. Speaking of which, it's about 100 kilometres (or an hour and a quarter's drive) to the centre of the City of Love/Lights/Disneyland, putting fantastic theme parks, world-class art museums, Seine river cruises and dozens of France's finest monuments within your grasp. Just outside the orbit of the capital, Parc Astérix (40 minutes) will also prove popular with fans of rollercoasters, live shows and Gaullish comic book heroes. After action-packed days of stomping through cities and theme parks, it's reassuring to know that lower-key attractions await closer to base – carp fishing at the Domaine de Pimprez (30 minutes), surveying the military figurines on show at the Musée Antoine Vivenel (25 minutes) and calm country walks on the GR 123 route (10 minutes) are all options to bring your break back to cruising speed.
