The adobe-built bar restaurant

  • Eco-built campsite edging the Marais du Grand Clair in Pas-de-Calais
  • Loisiparc 10 minutes’ drive and the Mining History Centre 20 minutes
  • Micro-farm, permaculture garden and a restaurant/bar with roof terrace
As the name suggests, eco-friendly is the word that best describes Ecoland, a peaceful site with impressively green credentials on the edge of the marshy Marais du Grand Clair at Palluel, Pas-de-Calais. The owners of this one-hectare property are set on finding ways to boost the local economy and promote slow tourism. The site’s restaurant/bar certainly lives up to their quest for sustainability, being one of the first adobe-built constructions in France. Fresh, homemade and seasonal dishes star on the menu, with the ingredients either coming from the site’s permaculture garden or from zero-miles local growers – and the view from the rooftop terrace at sundown is pretty good too. This leafy and carefully landscaped site also has a micro-farm, where you’ll meet cute miniature donkeys, Pygmy goats and sheep. They wander about the place freely for part of each day, and act as energy-saving lawn mowers, keeping the grass down the natural way. If you’re looking for family downtime, you can borrow books and board games on site. When more activity is called for, you have options including the pétanque court, a darts board and a boat for exploring the Marais du Grand Clair. And come the evening, there’s no need to take the car into town for entertainment, as concerts, shows and themed nights are held at the restaurant/bar.

What customers say

Lovely peaceful site with animals by the lake. Friendly staff, great food & value. But one guest unhappy with a steep cleaning fee, yurt condition & lack of supplies. Basic facilities and limited vegan food also mentioned.

Electric optional grass and earth touring pitch

Liked What a beautiful place - very eco friendly and active and rather quirky in the nicest way. Lovely evidence of local involvement with children in forest school activities and building. Loved mingling with the donkeys goats and sheep! Private space for campervan. Showers, toilets , washing up sinks all immaculate . Lovely walks - would return and highly recommend .

Disliked None - but be aware that local church bell rings throughout the night ! Whilst very quaint didn’t need to know so much time!

Electric optional grass and earth tent pitch

Liked The cafe/bar has a lovely roof terrace overlooking the lake. Fab breakfast served - of bread, jam, eggy bread or pancakes and tea/coffee or hot chocolate. Cheese and bread platters available in the afternoon/evening.

Tent pitches are a good size and are separated by trees/bushes so feel very private. The kids loved being able to stroke the donkeys, goats and sheep. Warm showers.

Supermarket a few mins drive away.

Disliked Be aware that the donkeys steal everything so you have to pack everything away and/or barricade your pitch with metal barriers.

Electric optional grass and earth touring pitch

Liked Friendly owners and natural setting. Shower block was clean and accessible with good water pressure and nice temperature.

Disliked Bar and restaurant not open. Had to gate our pitch to keep animals out because of our dog. Pitch wasn’t suitable for a motorhome, very uneven, although they did offer several pitches but this was the best of them.

Local attractions

It only takes a few steps from your pitch to get active; you can hike or cycle around the Marais du Grand Clair – often spotting deer, teals and swans along the way. Alternatively, you might prefer to navigate the narrow channels of the lake by boat, and there are many waterside picnic spots where you can disembark on your mini-cruise. To witness eco-tourism at its best, venture out to the former industrial town of Lens (35 minutes’ drive), where vast mounds of coal waste have become magnets for wildlife. You can climb or mountain bike it to the top of the vegetation-covered slag heaps, where you will be rewarded with far-reaching views over Pas-de-Calais. Visit the Mining History Centre (20 minutes) for more history of coal mining in the area as well as tours through the underground shafts. If the kids have had enough of heritage by then, take them to cool down on the splash pads at Loisiparc (10 minutes), where there are also trampolines for younger guests, volleyball courts and pedal boats for pottering about on the lake.
