  • Quiet and family-friendly Limousin site overlooking Lac de Vassivière
  • Golf and riding 10 minutes’ drive; Les Loups de Chabrières 55 minutes
  • Shop with a bread delivery service; kayaking and sailing on the lake
Small, peaceful and thoroughly family-friendly, Camping Ushuaïa Villages La Presqu’île is set on the edge of Lac de Vassivière, five minutes’ drive from the sleepy village of Royère-de-Vassivière in lush Limousin countryside. Surrounded by greenery, this is a low-key sort of a place for lots of running around, playing games and splashing about in the lake. Spacious pitches are tucked under trees to save you from the midday sun; modern amenities include several shower blocks – one for guests with limited mobility – and drinking taps dotted around the site. A playground takes care of younger kids, while the whole family can get gently competitive over games of pétanque and table tennis. As well as taking refreshing dips in Lac de Vassivière, you can go fishing (licence required), kayaking, dinghy sailing or paddleboarding. If you like a good hike or cycle ride, there’s a trail around the shoreline, or alternatively you can kick back in a hammock with a good book and dream the day away. A small convenience store opens at reception during July and August, where you can also order bread and fresh pastries for delivery the following morning.

Local attractions

As well as all the watery pursuits down on the lake, you can challenge the kids to mini golf at Vauveix or go pony trekking through the wooded countryside (both 10 minutes’ drive). Chabrières Forest (40 minutes) is a handy place to tire out young kids on woodland walks to weird rock formations, while there are more testing hikes to be had in Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park (about an hour). If the kids are into their wildlife, they’ll relish the chance to see semi-feral wolves in their natural environment at Les Loups de Chabrières (55 minutes); they can also pet friendly llamas at the Ferme Les Clautres (an hour). For cultural days out, there are several castles to see locally; Villemonteix (also an hour) is known for its sumptuous interiors and priceless tapestries, while Château de Boussac (an hour and a half) is open for guided tours of its medieval interior. The cathedral, porcelain museums and old cobbled centre of Limoges are roughly an hour away, while thought-provoking Oradour-sur-Glane (an hour and half) is a slowly decaying memorial dedicated to the victims of a World War II massacre.
