  • Shaded family-friendly site a 15-minute drive from Aresquiers beach
  • A 25-minute drive from Sète and Montpellier
  • Pools, bar, restaurant, bouncy castle, kids’ club and cycle hire
Run by a family for families, Camping Altea in Hérault has activities and amenities to suit pretty much everyone in your travel crew – from a bouncy castle and kids’ club for the sprogs to water polo games and a pétanque court for the adults. As well as the main swimming pool, there’s also a separate paddling area where the small sorts can splash safely. Add in a multisports ground and a play area and there should be plenty of ways to get the younger members of the family tired enough for an early night. If you've got a willing babysitter with you, leave napping tiddlers in their capable hands and linger over a meal at the restaurant and a drink on the open-air terrace. Meals could also be cooked on the shared barbecues dotted around the park – and when you (inevitably) realise that a key ingredient hasn’t made it along on the trip, you can pop in to the site’s shop or browse the medieval centre of Vic-la-Gardiole, less than a five-minute drive away, for supplies. If you’re feeling lethargic the morning after a hefty meal, go on a health kick at the gym or take a brisk walk in the surroundings. The park’s sandwiched between Sète and Montpellier (both 25 minutes’ drive away), both top-notch towns to explore, and is also five minutes or so from wanders next to the flamingos at the Reservoir Vic La Guardiole. Swims in the Med at Aresquiers beach are 15 minutes away.

Electric grass and earth pitch (private bathroom amenities)

Electric grass and earth pitch

Electric grass and earth pitch (private bathroom amenities)

Liked Was busy but still quiet. We had a private bathroom and kitchen so that made a difference.
Barmaid was lovely and she even put the England football game on for us

Disliked We were asked to pay a €220 deposit which we were unaware of. Once the inspected the private facilities we were given it back

Local attractions

Aresquiers (15 minutes’ drive) is a splendid spot for a bit of beach time – it has a spacious free parking area and draws in kitesurfers and windsurfers with its breezy conditions. Drop by the forest on the way for walks amid the trees; for more treks, head to the hiking trails up the Massif de la Gardiole (25 minutes). Closer by, around a kilometre from the site, are the Via Rhona’s cycling paths running towards Palavas-les-Flots (50 minutes’ ride). This resort town is circled by lots of lakes and is split in two by the Lez river, so it’s a scenic spot for a day out. Once you get there, poke around the 18th-century fort, get up high on the fairground rides of Luna Park or just swim in the serene waters of the beach. Other things to do in this action-packed area include touring the towering Cathédrale de Maguelone (25 minutes’ drive), snacking at the shellfish shacks along the Étang de Thau lagoon (35 minutes) and dawdling around the scenic Gellon valley village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert (50 minutes).
