City time or countryside time? Work it out as you go along when you’re staying at Camping La Clémentine – this family-friendly site is in a fabulous Gard location on the eastern edge of the Cévennes National Park and with the city of Alès 10 minutes’ drive away.
That setting makes this place a wonderful base for a holiday that’s packed with variety – you could be hiking through the stunning natural landscapes of the Cévennes one day, riding the Cévennes Steam Train the next, and then following up with some time wandering around the historic attractions of Alès (or Nîmes, which is less than an hour’s drive away).
There’s no mistaking that you’re in the scenic Cévennes National Park when you look out at the views around the site – it’s pretty much gorgeous green hills wherever you look. And that natural loveliness also spreads onto the site, which has a splendid 30 acres of greenery and oak forest to its name.
Such a setting makes this a lovely location for those who’d like to relax – perhaps taking a stroll to the lagoon area to sunbathe on the sand or take a gentle dip. But there’s plenty here for the active types too: the site has an outdoor pool, a play area, a games room and facilities for playing padel tennis, badminton, table tennis and miniature golf.
On top of all that, there are kids’ club activities (for ages five and over) in July and August, plus evening entertainment like live music or family activities. Barbecues are permitted if you fancy some outdoor cooking, but there’s also the option of dining at the restaurant with its poolside terrace.

Local attractions
From here it’s easy to get out onto the hiking and mountain biking trails of the Cévennes National Park, perhaps scaling Mont Bouquet (35 minutes’ drive) for spectacular views. For other ways to see the scenery, you can take a paragliding flight, go canoeing in the Gorges du Gardon (45 minutes) or take it easy with a ride on the Cévennes Steam Train (25 minutes).
Adrenaline junkies may also like to climb up into the trees at Aqua Forest (20 minutes) or zoom around the go-kart track at Pôle Mécanique Alès Cévennes (10 minutes). For gentler days out, stroll serenely around The Bamboo Cevennes (20 minutes) or get underground at Caves of Trabuc (half an hour).
The city of Alès (10 minutes) is a must, of course, for its cathedral, market halls and programme of festivals. If you have time, you may also like to make trips to Uzès and/or Nîmes, both just under an hour away and filled with interesting historic attractions.
