Families, form an orderly queue please, and get ready to get active at Campotel at Domaine des Ormes, 10 minutes’ drive from medieval Dol-de-Bretagne in Brittany. There’s never going to be a dull moment here, what with the campsite’s impressive range of activities, watersports, family-friendly facilities and all-day entertainment.
You can try your hand at a different sport from morning until night: tennis, wall climbing, horse-riding, fishing, wake-boarding, skiing, tow-tubing… They’re all on the agenda, alongside more relaxing pastimes like golf on the 18-hole course or exploring the on-site lake by pedal boat.
Kids (and their big-kid parents) can easily spend days in the covered aqua park with a lazy river, water slides and wave pool. In high season (just in case you have nothing to do for a moment), the in-house ents team plan exciting events for the kids during the day, and an after-dark schedule of shows and musicals while you kickback with a cocktail in the restaurants, pizzeria or bars.
Modern accommodation is in caravans sleeping up to seven people, with spacious and light-filled living areas and kitchens that have all the basics for creating family meals. You’re in for a treat with the campsite itself too, as it is set among the woodlands and wildflower meadows of a stately 16th-century château.

Families with younger offspring, jump in the car and make for Cobac Parc (15 minutes’ drive), where there are kid-friendly water rides, a unicorn-themed sculpture walk and mini-trains chugging between the various attractions. For higher-octane days out, Karting de Saint-Malo (25 minutes) has a selection of go-karting and biking tracks suitable for all levels and abilities, or give sand-yachting a go on the sandy expanse at Plage de Cherrueix (20 minutes).
The seaside resort of Saint-Malo (35 minutes) on the Emerald Coast makes a great family day out for its clutch of sandy beaches, harbourside seafood restaurants, self-guided heritage walks through Intra Muros old town and the Grand Aquarium full of sharks, turtles and rays.
Cultural excursions might include a trip to the soaring Gothic-style Cathédrale Saint-Samson in historic Dol-de-Bretagne (10 minutes), where the streets are packed with brightly painted, half-timbered medieval houses – and you can climb the town’s 12th-century ramparts to glimpse Mont-Saint-Michel Bay on the horizon.
