How does a lushly leafy setting in the Morvan Regional Natural Park sound for a relaxed stay? Add to that meandering countryside walks direct from base, plus a 2,000-year-old archaeological site and excellent cycling and mountain biking trails… there’s rather a lot off site to reel you in around here too. Among the foothills of the mountainous Morvan massif and named after the source of the Yonne river (several hundred metres higher up in the mountains), Camping Aux Sources de l'Yonne sits very pretty on the edge of a forest. Whenever you want to cool off (perhaps after a lengthy hike?), the site’s small unheated outdoor pool is the place to be; otherwise, the lovely rambling gardens are a splendid spot to ensconce oneself in with book or tablet. Foodie supplies in the form of local wines, ice cream and takeaway meals are available on site, and fresh homemade breads are baked every day there too. For self catering, a kitchen with a fridge and a spacious dining area is available for guests’ use, and over at the leafy terrace (behind the house) there's more dining space for sunny and/or partially shaded alfresco eats. The bathroom facilities – which include showers, toilets and washbasins, plus a separate area with a washing machine and two extra washbasins (one each for vegetables and for dishes) can be found tagged onto the park’s family homestead.

Liked: Great welcome, fabulous wooded hillside location, lovely pool and sizeable pitches. Well equipped shared kitchen and fridge/freezer with communal seating inside and outside. Quiet.

Disliked: The owner and the other campers were very friendly and considerate but it's a campsite best suited to couples- we were rather conscious of the noise we were making!

Liked: Everything. One of the best campsites we have stayed on.
Has a lovely kitchen/common room area. Secluded pitches. Owners makes his own bread, which is delicious. Clean and excellent recycling.

Disliked: Having to leave.

Local attractions

If you’re into endless woodland walks, tramping across fields and traipsing over waymarked mountain trails, then Camping Aux Sources de l'Yonne comfortably ticks all these hiking holiday boxes; if walking’s not your thing (or you’d like to add yet more outdoorsy stuff to your itinerary), then you’ll be chuffed to learn that the area is excellent for road and mountain biking too. For a spot of history, the Bibracte – a ruined 2,000-year-old Celtic city on top of Mont Beuvray – lies six kilometres away; having a wander around the museum here (at the foot of the mountain) comes highly recommended by Aux Sources staff. If you’ve got a car, then the large and rather lovely lakes of Pannecière and des Settons are a 50-minute drive away for fishing and watersports plus hiking, horse riding and mountain biking around the lanes and bridleways that encircle the lakes, and the small and handsome walled hill city of Autun is 40 minutes away by car.
