  • Shaded site with beach access 10 minutes’ drive from San Antero
  • Coveñas five minutes’ drive; Ciénaga de la Caimanera 15 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; outdoor pool; sheltered communal hut with sea views
A little corner of tropical paradise is waiting for you (and your canine companion) at Costaguana Camping Park, a tranquil site lapped by the waters of the Caribbean Sea, in the Sucre department of northern Colombia. Costaguana has direct access to its own private beach, which makes it extra desirable for anyone hoping to spend their holiday as a bit of a beach bum: swimming, walking along the shore of the Caño La Balsa bay and enjoying spectacular coastal sunsets. On days when the sea is too rough for your liking, you can chill in the small outdoor pool, with a cool ‘cerveza’ in hand, maybe… By the way, beer and other basic necessities, including drinking water (which is not available at the site), can be sourced in the town of Coveñas (five minutes’ drive or a half-hour walk), which also has a good range of restaurants. Shaded by tall trees, spacious sand and grass pitches at this secure site come with optional electricity. In addition to a toilet/shower block and a washing-up station, there is a sheltered communal area in a raised hut with a straw roof and sea views. Early in the morning, you might have the hut to yourself, in which case feel free to roll out your yoga mat: it’s a top spot for your sun salutations.

Local attractions

On the road to Coveñas, Marine Museum Park (five minutes’ drive) illustrates the history of the Colombian Marine Infantry. As well as interactive exhibits such as a reconstruction of the 1823 Battle of Lake Maracaibo, a key episode in the struggle for the country’s independence, the museum displays military vehicles, weapons and uniforms. Lively Calle 12 in San Antero (10 minutes) is lined with grocery shops and stores selling beach gear – from inflatables and footballs, to flip flops. On the outskirts of town, the Museo del Calabazo houses a vast collection of items crafted out of gourds, including fruit bowls, hanging baskets and decorative objects in the shape of birds and other animals. If you’re into wildlife watching, take a canoe trip through the nature reserve of Ciénaga de la Caimanera (15 minutes). Its extensive areas of dense mangroves are home to native bird and fish species, plus crabs and raccoons.
