Local attractions
Coffs Harbour (35 minutes’ drive) is popular for its sandy beaches and pretty marina. From the marina, a walkway leads to the Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve, a forested spot with splendid views of the coastline. There are more views from the Forest Sky Pier, which hangs above the tree canopy.
Swimming, surfing and snorkelling await at Woolgoolga (35 minutes). Hike up to the Woolgoolga Headland for far-reaching views; between May and October you might also catch a glimpse of whales on their migration. Inland from Woolgoolga, the Wedding Bells State Forest is popular with mountain bikers.
Dorrigo National Park (one and a half hours), part of the Gondwana Rainforest, attracts day trippers with its trails and waterfalls, like rocky Sherrard Falls and Crystal Shower Falls, where a path takes you behind the water. Those with a head for heights might want to check out the views from the Skywalk Lookout.
