With views to the Isle of Arran, Ailsa Craig and the Kintyre Peninsula, Knockneen Croft is in a truly spectacular Dumfries and Galloway location. If you turn to the west when you’re on site, you’re looking straight at Belfast Lough and to the coast of Northern Ireland (on clear days anyway). And if that’s not enough, you can see Mull of Kintyre and Torr Head facing each other across the Sea of Moyle from the bottom of the croft’s drive. Once you’ve absorbed the views, you’ll be able to turn your attention to the accommodation, which is in a brace of luxuriously fitted-out wooden pods. Both have all the basics in kitchenettes, well-designed open-plan living spaces with armchairs and settees, king-size beds and ensuite bathrooms with hot water at the ready in the showers. Both pods stay warm and cosy all year around, and each has a fenced garden (so you can park any accompanying dogs safely) with woodfired hot tubs for relaxing and meditating over the sea views. Knockneen is home to some very free-range hens as well as semi-feral cats on mousing duty in the outbuildings. In the summer months there are also cattle on the croft – for these reasons please keep your dogs on a lead and under close control while on site.

Eden camping pod

The views from the pod are amazing, this area of scotland is rugged and beautiful! Mark and Sarah could not be more helpful. We highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique, relaxing retreat.

Josie Jane 2 bedroom camping pod

Liked: Excellent place to relax and unwind. Couldn't fault anything on the site, everything you needed was in the cabin. We had our 2 dogs with us who had an enclosed area to run about, they loved the freedom of just going out at there leasure and doing there thing while we were either in the hot tub or just chilling inside. Mark and Sarah made you feel welcome on arrival and were very accommodating. Will definitely be back for another relaxing break here. Chris + Claire

Eden camping pod

Liked: Such a wonderful little hidden gem. Truly dog-friendly too, the garden is fully enclosed and the owners love dogs, even bringing ours a treat when we arrived. The weather was so wet the days we were there but the cabin stocked everthing for a peaceful day relaxing, with the sky clearing at sunset so we had a trememdous view of all the stars while we sat in the hot tub.

Eden camping pod

Liked: A fantastic trip, Knockneen Croft is spectacular. The host are friendly and extremely helpful. Stunning views and amazing sunsets. The addition of milk, tea and coffee was greatly appreciated. Fire wood for the hot tub was available - the hot tub was one of the highlights of the stay. Spacious living space with sofa and a well equipped kitchen. 10/10 phenomenal place.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike at all! A stunning location and phenomenal hosts. Loved it so much we booked again.

Eden camping pod

Liked: We stayed at Knockneen Croft for 2 nights and it really was a home away from home. The pod was kitted out with everything we needed and the owners were welcoming and friendly. The views were second to none and it was peaceful. We were able to totally wind down and relax. There was nothing better than taking in the beautiful sunset from the hot tub in the evening. The bed was comfortable and I had the most bliss sleep both nights. The local shop in Leswalt had any additional supplies we needed and we even took a short trip to Stranraer for some shopping before unwinding back at the pod. A 10/10 weekend and we can’t thank Mark & Sarah enough for their hospitality.

Local attractions

One of Scotland’s lesser-known corners, Rhins of Galloway is popular with cyclists starting the epic cross-country Kirkpatrick C2C route from Stranraer to Eyemouth on the east coast. Walkers can join the Rhins of Galloway Coast Path, which loops around the peninsula from Stranraer, at Dally Bay or Corsewall Lighthouse (both about an hour’s walk), while Portpatrick (25 minutes’ drive) is the beginning of the spectacular Southern Upland Way, which ends just south of Edinburgh. If you need a quiet day after all that cycling and walking, the Gulf Stream gives the Rhins of Galloway its warm climate, and there are several top-class gardens to check out, including Logan Botanic Gardens (40 minutes), Glenwhan Gardens (25 minutes) and Castle Kennedy (20 minutes). If the weather should turn sour, Stranraer (15 minutes) has a variety of shops, a museum, castle and lots of pubs and restaurants to dip into. The town also hosts a number of world-class events, such as the Scottish Fin and Foil windsurfing championship in August, and the very delicious Oyster Festival each September.
