  • Spacious family- and pet-friendly park with a country park feel
  • Private sandy beach on site; a 15-minute drive from Kirkcudbright
  • Indoor pool, café, lounge bar, amusement room and 18-hole golf course
If the kids say they’re bored at Brighouse Bay Holiday Park at Kirkcudbright on the Dumfries and Galloway coast, you might want to send them home. Sublime Irish Sea views, heaps of on-site activities, three ponds, a private beach and countryside walks are all yours for the taking. It's pretty spectacular by night too, as the setting in Galloway's dark-skies region means the stargazing here is stellar: the subdued lighting on site enhances it all the more. Pretty much everything you could want is on site or close by: if golf on the 9/18 course at Brighouse Bay Golf course doesn’t float your boat, wander along the coast (camera in hand) or follow the signposted hikes through the local woodland. Other stunning options include launching a kayak from the bay’s all-tide slipway or taking in the views with a drink from the on-site lounge bar… If the weather should be less than co-operative, stay undercover in the park’s Jacuzzi and indoor pool (available for an additional fee). There's a separate splash area for toddlers or the indoor amusement room. Also on site – yes, there’s more – the well-stocked shop keeps guests sorted for essentials and the café serves hot and cold meals and snacks to eat there or in the family lounge bar. Make a visit to reception your first stop, where staff can offer suggestions on what to do and see while you stock up on leaflets, maps and gifts. Wardens are on site if you need any pointers during your stay. On-site amenities include two shower blocks with ensuite cubicles for families, plus separate ladies and gents' sections in the larger block. Dishwashing and laundry facilities are also available.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch (TV aerial)

Liked: Great quiet pitch. Golf course and swimming pool onsite was great. Decent shop. Lovely walks and beach nearby. Nice modern showers/toilets.

Disliked: Pool was closed when we arrived for staff training. Restaurant only serving pizzas. Bike tracks advertised on their website have obviously not been open for a long time so not sure why website not updated. Driving range closed for no apparent reason which reception didn’t seem to know about. Golf booking seemed to be a bit of a free for all as 3 groups there at our tee off time. Pool timings not ideal as not allowed in till other group out - need a 5/10 min gap between groups. Lockers take 20p and don’t return which was inconvenient when locking twice. Changing room floor filthy - didn’t look like it had been properly cleaned for a while. Did not like the communal toilet/shower block. Unsure why since recently renovated area they didn’t make one make and one female.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Reception staff on arrival were very friendly.
Location is great , right next to the sea.
Electric hook up.
Club House.
Views.
Toilet/shower block nearest reception were very nice - the other block was a bit dated.

Disliked: Shop closed early without notice.
A lot of “staff training”
Our pitch was nice but not very big.
Further into the camp site it was a bit of an eye sore - could do with serious landscaping.
Wi Fi was great in our tent as we were right behind the plane - but elsewhere it was non existent. Either have it or don’t.
Not much for older kids to do. Could maybe do with a football pitch.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Lovely clean site. Nice park and picturesque bay. Friendly staff also. Toilet and shower facilities where rely good aswell

Disliked: Could be more things to do for kids on the site other than the park. But it doesn't make or break the place.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Close to the beach

Disliked: Worst place Iv ever stayed
Between the Screaming and shouting on the park well after 1am and the dogs barking all night we had zero sleep
Couldn’t get into the pool as it is well undersized for the size of the site. And apparently fully booked
Very expensive £30 per night non electric pitch. Pitched right out the way from any toilet blocks. 20 min uphill walk to the complex. I had to drive to the toilet blocks
The entertainment complex had no beer on tap and were charging 4.40 for a warm bottle of madri straight from the multi pack bought in a supermarket.
Showers and toilet blocks were filthy and witnessed the cleaner marking on the sheet it had been cleaned and walked off.
The bins were overflowing and people were cleaning there chemical disposals in the drinking water points.
If I hadn’t of drove 3 and a half hours I was going to leave on the first night.
Zero phone reception
I’m glad I only camped if I had of payed for a caravan rental or something I’d be even more angry at having absolutely nothing to do on the site at all. Glad we didn’t take the kids as other than the small playground there would have been absolutely nothing else to entertain them.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Great pitches, huge! Very well maintained. Toilets and showers kept clean. Great play area for the little ones! Lovely scenery and plenty of walks.

Disliked: The clubhouse seems rather small considering the capacity of the sight. Food was lovely, when it came, 90 mins after we ordered it!

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: In a lovely area for walks with the dog both on beach and in woodland.

Disliked: Not the best site we have stayed on.
The site needs attention in some areas to smarten it up.
All the bins were overflowing which was both unsightly and a health hazard.
No lighting on the site.
Very slow food service in the club house.
Level good sized pitches.

Local attractions

Dumfries and Galloway is packed with pursuits for all ages and interests – and it must be pointed out here that the ice cream and nature trails of the Cream O’Galloway ice cream factory are a mere 15 minutes' drive away… Also nearby is The Cocoabean Company (15 minutes' drive) at Kirkcudbright, which has interactive children’s workshops and a chocolate shop (hurrah) alongside well-equipped and roomy indoor and outdoor play areas. While in town, kick around in the grounds of 16th-century MacLellan's Castle (15 minutes) in the centre of Kirkcudbright, and have a look at Broughton House & Garden (15 minutes), former home of one of the Glasgow Boys EA Hormel and housing a huge collection of works by Robert Burns (painter, not poet Rabbie). At Gatehouse of Fleet (20 minutes), about nine miles to the north-west from Kirkcudbright, the Mill on the Fleet art gallery holds regular exhibitions and events like literary launches and talks. Follow up a morning here with an afternoon at 15th-century Cardoness Castle (20 minutes) or around the thousands of species blooming around at Cally Gardens (20 minutes). And a few more gems that must be seen on a Dumfries and Galloway holiday: a boat trip to the Gem Rock Museum (35 minutes) at Creetown, filled with fossils, rocks, minerals and gemstones, and a stargazing trip to Galloway Forest Park (40 minutes), the first designated Dark Sky Park in the UK.
