  • Family-friendly site in with direct access to a private beach
  • A quarter of an hour to Kirkcudbright or Newton Stewart by car
  • Direct access to the South West Coastal 300 route
Folk come to the coast of Dumfries and Galloway for the peace and quiet, the castles and – if you opt for this particular spot just off the A75 – for access to a private sandy beach. Newton Campsite is a family-friendly site in a rural location with direct access to Scotland's southern seascapes and the scenic South West Coastal 300 driving route, all in a convenient location 15 minutes' drive from the popular towns of Kirkcudbright and Newton Stewart. The site is surrounded by fields and the pitches are just a short walk from the beach, where you can relax over a picnic or bring a kayak, bodyboard or wee sailboat and make your own oceangoing adventures. In the evening, head back to base to build a small fire in the designated spots, or bring your own firepit and spend the night enjoying sizzling snacks and gazing up at the stars. Newton Campsite has basic facilities only, including a waste-disposal point for toilet waste and a tap for fresh drinking water. Because of this, you'll need to bring your own toilet facilities (and all guests staying in tents are asked to bring their own toilet tent). The nearest set of shops is about four miles away, while Newton Stewart is where to head for bigger supermarkets and restaurants.

What customers say

A lovely, quiet site with amazing views, right on the beach, perfect for water sports & exploring. Guests loved the friendly owners, roomy pitches, and great value. Basic facilities (water/waste) offer a real "back to basics" vibe. Nature and peace make it a top recommendation.

Non-electric grass and sand touring pitch

Liked The location.

Disliked Its a big site, theres only one portaloo and it was disgusting.

It is stated that there are no toilets or showers tho, so its not really a complaint.

Non-electric grass and sand touring pitch

Liked We stayed for 2 nights near to the beach which was amazing. Fantastic view, sandy beach, firepits welcome, friendly fellow campers (some of which had been visiting this particular campsite for 30 years). A large grass area and a beachside strip of grass with plenty of space for awnings and toilet tents. Good 5G for mobile devices.

Disliked Only one portaloo which quickly became full, thankfully we had our own portapottie however if you are relying on the portaloo this didn't seem ideal for the number of campers staying.

Non-electric grass and sand tent pitch

Liked Wow! Absolutely loved our stay. Arrived mid afternoon on Saturday of the Bank Holiday weekend. Tent camping with our Defender 90 rather than our camper. Found a flat place to pitch, walked on the beach with the dogs. Had campfires and totally chilled. The weather was kind.

Non-electric grass and sand touring pitch

Liked Absolutely beautiful site with close access to the beach and unrivalled scenery. Several parking options depending if you wanted an elevated view of the bay or close to the beach for easy access all of which offered superb camping.

No facilities apart from a water tap, toilet drop and at the time of our visit a single porta loo but I'm told this is not permanent - a true wild camping spot not to be missed

Disliked Nothing to dislike about the site

Non-electric grass and sand touring pitch

Liked Wonderful campsite. We loved being able to choose where we pitched. The site is quite hilly but with plenty flat areas for our tent. My 2 loved the little rock formation on top of the hill, their breakfast spot during our stay. The beach a 2 minute walk was fabulous. The owners are super friendly and we're very understanding when our dog decided to howl while trying to check in. Brilliant wifi on our phones once on the pitches.

Non-electric grass and sand touring pitch

Liked We LOVE this site. Friendly, chilled out and right by the sea. This was our second stay and we'll definitely be back very soon. Highly recommend a trip to the next bay (walkable at low tide) to 1 Little Farm shop for their lovely sausage rolls and home reared meat.

Local attractions

In the immediate vicinity, you could explore mysterious ancient history at Cairn Holy (five minutes' drive), a set of Neolithic chambered tombs. If you're minded to range far and wide you might also like a spin around the 7Stanes bike park in Dalbeattie (30 minutes). One of the closest castles is at Cardoness (five minutes) in a hilltop location where you can take in far-reaching views, while down by the coast Carsluith Castle (10 minutes) is very well preserved and free to enter. More history and heritage is showcased in Kirkcudbright (15 minutes; pronounced kirk-oo-bree), including Broughton House, a restored Georgian mansion. The town also has a swimming pool for those months when the sea's a bit too chilly for a dip. Newton Campsite is also within easy reach of pretty coastal peninsulas like Isle of Whithorn (40 minutes), a pretty coastal village long associated with St Ninian, who brought Christianity to Scotland. The Rhins of Galloway peninsula (45 minutes) is also well worth a visit if you fancy visiting green spaces like Logan Botanic Garden (an hour) or the southernmost point in Scotland, the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse (an hour and 10 minutes).
