How far north into the Scottish mainland will you venture on your next holiday? If you’re driving all the way up to Aberdeenshire, consider staying at Craighead Holiday Park, about a mile inland from Cruden Bay and the North Sea coast (five minutes’ drive). Park on one of the level touring pitches across five grassy acres, then look around and take in the views of the Buchan countryside, with its gentle hills. There is no passing traffic to disrupt your sleep at this blissfully remote site; just the wind blowing through the trees. Watersports enthusiasts check out Cruden Bay, a wide, sandy stretch with gently sloping waters. The beach is popular with swimmers and windsurfers, not to mention wildlife watchers, who try to catch a glimpse of puffins, gannets, seals and dolphins during the summer months. Cruden Bay also happens to be dog-friendly year round, so your four-legged buddy doesn’t have to spend its holiday in the caravan. If a beach stroll is not quite the vigorous exercise your dog was hoping for, the rugged cliffs just north of the bay come with more challenging terrain – and the dramatic ruins of Slains Castle (five minutes, or a 35-minute walk), which are said to have inspired Bram Stoker to write ‘Dracula’. Meanwhile, golfers head to the elevated fairways of Cruden Bay Golf Club (five minutes), established in the late 19th century by Old Tom Morris. Amenities at the well-maintained site include electric hook-ups, a modern shower and toilet block, a launderette and chemical waste disposal.

Local attractions

Just beyond Slains Castle, the Bullers of Buchan (five minutes’ drive) is a dramatic area of granite cliffs carved by the relentless North Sea waves. One of its features is the Pot, a chasm created by the collapse of a sea cave. Puffins and guillemots nest in the cliffs, and the area becomes a carpet of wildflowers in the summer. If keeping your eyes peeled on Cruden Bay has not helped in spotting seals, head to the small town of Newburgh (20 minutes), where a sandy beach at the mouth of the River Ythan is home to a 400-strong colony. Just inland from the town are the ruins of 16th-century Knockhall Castle. The Maritime Museum in Aberdeen (35 minutes) displays figureheads and ship models such as the ‘Thermopylae’ tea clipper, as well as explore the area’s history of North Sea oil drilling. The Robert Stevenson-designed Girdle Ness Lighthouse, at the tip of a verdant headland, dates from 1833.
