The site

  • Adults-only touring site a five-minute drive from the Jurassic Coast
  • Bridport five minutes’ drive; Lyme Regis 20 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; shop selling local cheeses and meats; newspaper delivery
A year-round adults-only site in the shade of distinctive Colmers Hill, Ernie’s Plot is easily reached from the A35. Not that you would know that a major road passes anywhere near: the site is surrounded by Dorset’s splendidly rural landscape, with hedgerows and leafy trees, inquisitive sheep in the nearby field and the occasional cameo by the local wildlife, mainly foxes and deer. Sitting halfway between Bridport and Chideock (five minutes’ drive to either), the site is also a five-minute drive from the spectacular Jurassic Coast, fringed by the South West Coast Path (cue epic walks with your four-legged companion) and dotted with pretty beaches – from pebbly Eype (which also happens to be dog-friendly), to Seatown, where you might bump into a fossil hunter or two. The touring pitches here are the Cadillacs of touring pitches: hardstanding, double-width and with water supply. Electric hook-up is coin-operated, so be sure to raid the piggy bank before your holiday, and come armed with plenty of £1 & £2 coins. And 50-pence coins, too – they will come in handy for the hot shower in the impeccably maintained toilet block. How’s this for luxury? One of the two cubicles comes with underfloor heating – bliss. Another elegant touch is the daily newspaper delivery (on request). Check out the information shed/shop, where you can get the timetable for the bus and brochures on nearby attractions, as well as essential items such as free-range eggs from the resident chooks, cheese and milk, and local meats.

Liked: Lovely small, scenic site. Very tidy and clean, nice kept pitches overlooking fields with sheep and ducks and chickens. Lovely countryside views. Nice safe walk to Bridport town centre, took us about 15 to 20 minutes with our dog so at strolling pace. But there’s also a bus stop just down the road too.
The 2 toilets and showers are great, kept very clean and perfect for the 8 pitches. There’s also an information shed with some essentials to buy if you’ve forgotten anything
We also were left some slices of cake by the owners which was much appreciated.
It’s a lovely site and we will definitely visit again soon.
Your electric is on a meter so remember your coins. We used about £1.50 over 2 days so definitely lots cheaper than a normal mains hook up.
There is a main road nearby, which you can hear at busy times, but after rush hour, it is hardly noticeable and we slept well each night. And the road gives you the convenience of having Bridport close by.
Also do the riverside walk from Bridport to West Bay, really flat scenic walk.

Disliked: Nothing. Lovely site.

Liked: Great spot with only 8 pitches - all with EHU and on gravel. Very well maintained and the owner is very helpful and friendly. They also have chickens so you can get super fresh eggs which were very tasty.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Was open earlier in the year than all the others, for our 4 night booking, and as requested they gave us the pitch nearest to the facilities.

Disliked: Right next to the road, at 4am had some muppet in a van slamming every single door about 5 times, till I suggested being quieter, (not the campsites fault i know) facilities were 2 sheds with no washing up sink, others used the dog wash, had a family emergency and had to leave on the second morning, no chance of even a partial refund, coin fed electric meter set pretty high, used £20 in one night, just a small radiator.
Dogs on lead signs but owner has two free roaming dogs.

Local attractions

In Lyme Regis (20 minutes’ drive), be sure to find the Mary Anning Rocks statue, honouring the town’s most renowned fossil hunter (and her dog Tray), then walk along the beach all the way to the stone jetty known as The Cobb, from where you can admire a cracking sunset. Maumbury Rings Roman Amphitheatre, in Dorchester (half an hour), started life as a Neolithic henge, before morphing into an amphitheatre in Roman times and an artillery fort in the 17th century. On the outskirts of town, Maiden Castle is an elaborate Iron Age hill fort, while bookworms might be drawn to National Trust - Hardy’s Cottage, where the author wrote some of his early works. Chesil Beach (35 minutes) is an 18-mile long expanse of shingle sheltering the Fleet Lagoon, an area of salt marshes that’s home to an assortment of migrant birds. At its north-western end is the Abbotsbury Swannery, with daily feedings of the swan colony and a swan-shaped maze.
