  • Relaxed campsite with views of Dartmoor; 20 minutes' drive to beaches
  • Totnes, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge all within 15 minutes' drive
  • Local pub within walking distance; barbecues welcome on site
If you're after a relaxed break in a peaceful setting, Farleigh Camping fits the bill. Set in the Devon countryside, it has views towards Dartmoor, and the national park itself is just a 15- to 20-minute drive away for hiking and cycling adventures. The site is a real haven for wildlife, with little traffic noise yet still within a short drive (15 minutes) of the local towns of Totnes, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge. If the beach is more your type of thing, gather up the buckets and spades and head to Bantham beach, 15 minutes' drive away, for surfing and soft sand. Slapton Sands, a scenic shingle beach, is a 20-minute drive away, as is Blackpool Sands, a sandy location with watersports and a seafront sauna. Facilities on site include clean toilets, warm showers and outdoor washing-up areas. There's also plenty of space to have a barbecue and play some outdoor games. Within a five-minute walk of the site, there's a traditional country pub famed among locals for its steaks; it's a popular spot, so a booking is recommended.

What customers say

Seo láthair ciúin, a ritheann teaghlach, le radhairc áille agus suíomh tuaithe. Moladh aeráid chiúin, deiseanna féachaint ar an spéir, agus aíonna cairdiúla, cabhracha a thugann leideanna áitiúla. Cé go bhfuil saoráidí bunúsach agus rustic, le leithris chompost, bhí siad glan agus lánstocáilte go ginearálta. Fuair roinnt cuairteoirí na saoráidí teoranta dúshlánach, go háirithe do leanaí, cé gur tugadh faoi deara go bhfuil an suíomh go nádúrtha álainn le go leor spáis.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Not sure, it was a field with limited facilities. Steph was lovely as was her daughter.

Disliked The style of compost toilet. There were two toilets, both deep holes on the ground with what looked like a toilet above. It was challenging for my children as was the very limited washing facilities. I booked last minute so perhaps was not clear on what I had signed us up too. Not the fault of the site but the weather was awful on our second to last night which confirmed that we needed to avoid another night.

From the manager: Hi Aiveen, I’m sorry that your children found things challenging. As described, it is a rustic camping site with basic facilities - a hot shower, three sinks and two compost toilets (this is a typical style of compost loo). The bonuses are that it is a beautiful natural, quiet site only used for a few weeks a year, with fantastic views of Dartmoor, dark night skies and not far to towns, beaches and the moor!
It was unfortunate that the windy, wet weather made things more difficult during your stay and I hope you haven’t been put off camping in the future.

Local attractions

Here for the hikes and bike rides? The South Hams District (10 minutes’ drive) is a splendid setting for all that, as is Dartmoor National Park (15 minutes). The River Dart (20 minutes) will make a fine introduction for watersports if you feel like getting your hair wet – and if that has you wanting more, Dartmouth (20 minutes) is a destination for surfing, kayaking, paddleboarding and coasteering. Perhaps you want to get into the rural spirit while here – meet animals at Pennywell Farm (20 minutes) and Totnes Rare Breeds Farm (25 minutes). If it’s the historic stuff you’re really interested in, Totnes (15 minutes) has a castle, museum, brewery and market. Dartmouth Castle (25 minutes), Dartington Trust (20 minutes) and the South Devon Railway (20 minutes) steam train are some other old haunts. Adults are likely to love the Sharpham Wine (20 minutes) vineyard, while families are well catered to at Woodlands Family Theme Park (10 minutes), Dartmoor Zoo (half an hour) or with boat trips on the Salcombe Estuary (half an hour).
