  • Working farm site on the southern edge of Dartmoor National Park
  • A range of accommodation, all with parking alongside
  • Dogs on leads welcome and small campfires allowed
Kayakers, canoeists, families, couples and groups have all been known to bunk down at the friendly Harford Bunkhouse and Camping, a working farm on the southern edge of Dartmoor National Park where the main sounds you’ll hear are the site animals – not a bad sound to wake up to… Harford is right on Dartmoor, with more than enough stuff to do in the area for all ages and inclinations, including poking around tiny traditional villages, farm sites and zoos, old houses and ancient castles, and active options like watersports, climbing, hiking and biking. And hacking: nearby Ivybridge has a couple of riding schools for group and private lessons, and there are miles of bridleways, old byways and moorland routes around Dartmoor. The site is a short distance from the river and a mile and a half from the old town of Ivybridge, where there are several pubs, a supermarket and a well-rated restaurant in the Glanvilles Mill shopping centre. It welcomes dogs (on leads at all times, please) and allows small campfires – although fires (and barbecues) must be kept off the ground and are at the owners’ discretion, so please ask before you spark one up.

What customers say

Sure, here's the summary translated into Irish English: Lovely, peaceful farm site on the edge of Dartmoor. Great views and spotless facilities, especially the hot showers. Hosts are friendly, and there are roaming animals like peafowl and sheep. Some found pods lacked power sockets and WiFi was limited. A guest had parking/cleanliness issues, which the manager clarified was due to advertised parking rules.

Hobbit camping pod (seven person)

Liked Friendly, easy-going staff. Hobbit pods were a great alternative to bringing a tent or booking a cheap hotel. Surrounding grounds were nice. Toilets/showers were very clean.

Disliked Because there were electric lights, we assumed the Hobbit pods would have outlets. Make sure you bring portable chargers! There are also no mirrors, pillows or bed linens in the pods, but we brought sleeping bags. WiFi only accessible when standing in a specific spot near the WiFi code.

Cabin

Liked We stayed in the cabin and it was lovely and quiet. It was dry and warm even in the rain. The toilet and washing up area for the site were kept clean and tidy our whole stay. It was also really nice seeing the peafowl around.

Disliked Would not recommend for anyone unable to walk far as you can not park next to cabin. This was not a problem for myself or my children. We did struggle to get ahold of the owner when we first arrived but was told they were at a funeral so couldn't be helped. Also do not recommend for anyone who can't handle country roads.

Hobbit camping pod (seven person)

Liked Beautiful setting, lovely walks onto Dartmoor, good size pod, friendly hosts, private, beds comfy and useful set of patio furniture for eating outside. Also helpful to have an electric ceiling light in the pod with switch but note there are no power sockets in there.

Disliked Not a huge issue for us but no WiFi in the pod itself but could get it up at the shower block.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Beautiful location, peaceful and scenic. This is what camping should be. A young fox drank from our dog's water bowl each night. Toilets and showers were always clean.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Nestling right on the edge of Dartmoor, this campsite was peaceful and quiet, with fantastic views onto the moor, loads of space and genuinely fantastic showers. I was able to park next to my tent but moved it down to the parking overnight on Friday as I had a very early start the next morning and didn’t want to disturb anyone by starting my car at silly o’clock. The middle of the large camping field is gently sloping and the best and flattest areas are around the edges so no one tends to camp in the middle, which helps with the feeling of space. Friendly host who came for a chat on the Saturday evening and who is available on her mobile when she is working elsewhere on the farm. Will definitely return.

Local attractions

As well as all the hiking, seeing the Dartmoor ponies is also a must: you’ll spot them all over the moors even if driving, but if you or the kids want to get up close, pony treks are available from several companies, and the Original Miniature Pony Centre at Moretonhampstead gives kids the chance to take a better look (double check opening times before you book as they have seasonal opening). Also nearby for mini naturalists is the Dartmoor Zoological Park, subject of the book and film We Bought a Zoo and housing big cats, monkeys, snakes and plenty more from around the globe; and the National Marine Aquarium less than 10 miles away in Plymouth. Three top walking trails are within a couple of miles of Harford Bunkhouse: the Erme Valley Trail, the Erme-Plym Trail and the Two Moors coast to coast Way from Ivybridge on the south coast to Lynmouth, Exmoor on the north. This in turn connects at various places to other long-distance paths including the Tarka Trail, the South West Coast Path and the Dartmoor Way. Walking too much faff? Cast off peacefully with the fishing opportunities in the area, from guided fly fishing trips on Dartmoor to fishing for salmon and trout on the River Erme.
