The beautiful sunset over a T5
That sunset
Downends striking sunsets
It's not every day you get a view like that

  • Peaceful two-acre site five minutes’ walk from Croyde Beach
  • Ilfracombe 25 minutes’ drive; Watermouth Castle half an hour
  • Café and bar; surf school, surfboard hire and beach shop on site
It’s quite alright if you want to unwind all day long at Downend Point Campsite, in the peaceful North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Mind you, you may find that quite hard with there being two surfing beaches nearby, both accessible via the South West Coast Path: Croyde Beach (five minutes’ walk) and Saunton Sands (half an hour on foot). Yes, you’re in quite the surfer’s playground here… Backed by sand dunes, Croyde Beach is popular with swimmers and surfers, although rockpooling and relaxing may help while away a few hours too. There’s a lifeguard service between May and September, and dogs are welcome on the beach outside of these months. Another walk along the South West Coast Path takes you to the Baggy Point Cliffs (45 minutes), or you can head inland to Croyde village centre (15 minutes), where you might decide to stop in one of the two pubs for a drink. Downend has its own café-bar too, which serves beer and wine, plus Sri Lankan curries, through the day and evening. Time it right, and you’ll get to see one of the site’s stunning sunsets over dinner. There’s also a surf school, surfboard hire and a beach shop on site. Clean and bordered by heather and hedgerows, the site has two acres of land. Facilities include clean, modern toilets, coin-operated hot showers and a washing-up area.

What customers say

Dead centre of Croyde Bay beach, with brilliant sea views. Staff, especially Henry, are lovely. Handy cafe/bar next door. Pitches can be a bit sloped, facilities are basic and showers cost extra, but that location is pure class. Loads want to come back.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Everything! We had the best time here and would highly recommend. The view is unbeatable from all parts of the site. Very short walk to the beach, friendly small site that didn’t feel crowded even though it was fully booked. The cafe and Sri Lankan curry stand did excellent food and coffees and was really convenient. You can have all 3 meals here if you can’t be bothered to cook. Henry and his team were so friendly and helpful, helping us pitch our tent and telling us all about the local area.
Some of the facilities were relatively basic so just be prepared for pop up camping (no electric, outside sink for brushing teeth, and just 2 showers, no mirrors) however that was all part of the experience. Brushing my teeth with the epic view became one of my highlights. Everything was clean and it was good for the soul to just slow down and embrace the natural beauty of the site.
You can pay for phone/power bank charging and ice block freezing at the reception.
The site is on a slope so be prepared for levelling, we got creative with stones for our camping table and we were on the relative flat part.
100/10, will be coming back.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Absolutely beautiful views from the campsite, right next to the beach and has a lovely bar/cafe next door. I would 100% go back again.
The campsite also allows dogs

Disliked The toilets and showers weren't the best, but they are building a new shower block so this should be improved soon.
