  • Small quiet, family run glampsite
  • Private wet room/shower for each of the Tents and Shepherd Hut
  • Close to North Devon beaches - Combe Martrin, Woolacombe, Croyde
Under the Milky Way is about 2.5 miles outside of Combe Martin, a quirky fun seaside village on the amazing North Devon Heritage Coast. We are in a quiet rural location surrounded by fields and woods and most of the time the loudest sound is birdsong, though we do have to cut the grass with our small tractor from time to time. We have three comfy Bell Tents, and one Shepherd Hut set well apart from each other in 10 acres of gently sloping fields and steep wooded valleys. Each tent is lavishly equipped with one double and two single beds, wood burning stove, rugs, candles and solar lights. There is no electricity, so though very comfy, you are camping, complete with a campfire if you wish. The tents are 5m in diameter, easily big enough for four people. Our Shepherds hut is built along traditional lines with steel wheels and a curved tin roof. Inside there is a wood burning stove, comfortable double bed and bunk beds with a third trundle bed for an additional small one. The gently curving ceiling and old oak beams add a warm and cozy feel while the fold down table and chairs, solar lights, candles, coat hooks, rugs and general storage space makes your stay very comfortable. All of our tents and the Hut have a decked area for seating and cooking under a fixed wooden shelter with a picnic bench, camping gas cooker, cool box/icepacks and all the bits and pieces you will need to cook with. It is possible to walk into the village of Combe Martin from here. It’s a steep climb, but a car is really essential if you wish to fully explore the area and all the varied experiences on offer. There is a good bus service from Combe Martin village that links all the main towns and villages so it is possible to leave the car behind at times, especially if you aim to visit some of the great pubs or restaurants in the area.

Local attractions

Under the Milky Way is a peaceful haven ideally situated to explore the whole area. The wide open spaces of Exmoor are a few minutes away and the fantastic surf beaches of Woolacombe and Croyde are only a fifteen minute drive away. The coastal path is glorious, and we would really recommend walking from the Hunters Inn towards Woody Way and Lee Abbey via the Valley of the Rocks, or through the woods along the river towards the sea. Exmoor is just behind us, and this is a wide-open rugged space with many walks, there are numerous guides to help you plan a journey safely. There are plenty of places to get lessons and hire the kit. Kayaking in Combe Martin Bay is great fun, and you can hire Kayaks from Surfside in the village, they also sell some great surfy clothes! Fishing trips and boat rides to Lundy Island are all available from the harbour in Ilfracombe and there are some great coffee shops and a really interesting little aquarium. Mountain biking is popular here and the Tarka Trail is a great place for the whole family to hire bikes and go for a ride mostly avoiding any roads. We love Watermouth Castle and so did our kids. There are quirky things to look at and touch in the castle and the grounds are great with lots of fairly gentle free rides and an old-fashioned water show. The Dinosaur and Wildlife Park appeals to many and has quite a range of animals and birds etc. to look at, the Sea Lion show is good fun. Driving a bit further away is The Big Sheep, a good day out and not a disaster if it rains as there is plenty to do under cover. Nearby in Barnstaple there is an indoor ten pin bowling alley. Barnstaple and Ilfracombe both have indoor swimming pools. There are so many things to do so here is just a quick summary: Coasteering Open road driving and quad bikes adventures Horse riding and pony trekking Clay pigeon shooting and tuitions
