  • Shepherd’s huts in Devon woodland 15 minutes’ drive from Barnstaple
  • Exmoor National Park 20 minutes’ drive; Woolacombe beach 15 minutes
  • Tree-shaded site with hammocks, an alfresco kitchen and barbecue
Set against a backdrop of ancient Devon trees, Woodland Ways is a peaceful and back-to-nature sort of spot where total relaxation is the order of the day. Just on the edge of the North Devon Coast National Landscape, it’s also a convenient base for well-known beaches like Woolacombe and lively market towns such as Barnstaple (both 15 minutes’ drive). Accommodation is in sustainable and locally made shepherd’s huts prettied up with fairy lights. Each has electricity, USB chargers and a woodburning stove, comfortable double mattresses and pure cotton bedding with anti-allergy duvets and pillows. Oak floors, insulated walls, rugs and cushions keep everything nice and cosy, and there’s ample space underneath the mezzanine beds for kids to sleep. Moving outside, there’s an outdoor shower, running hot water and loos. Communal facilities include hammocks for lazing the afternoon away among the trees, a campfire and firepit (local charcoal can be bought on site), plus an alfresco kitchen and covered barbecue area – alternatively, there’s a pub serving home-cooked food about 25 minutes’ walk away. There’s a safe play area and two allocated parking spaces. If you’re travelling by public transport, the nearest station is at Barnstaple, and a local bus stop about five minutes’ walk from the pitches. Cyclists arriving on site would do well to follow the quiet Devon lanes as the main road can get busy.

Local attractions

If you’re after rugged outdoor adventures hiking, biking or climbing up to jagged tors and ancient remains, Exmoor National Park (20 minutes’ drive) is the place for you. You can also follow the South West Coast Path (15 minutes) around the shoreline, with its stunning views over the Bristol Channel, while cyclists and walkers looking for gentle jaunts can take the Tarka Trail (also 15 minutes) through North Devon countryside. If surfing is your obsession, then you have a choice of the golden sands at Woolacombe (15 minutes) and Croyde (25 minutes). There are family beaches backed by cliffs at Coombe Martin (15 minutes), where you can also hire kayaks, and plenty of rockpooling adventures to be had at Ilfracombe beach (also 15 minutes). Kids with you? They’ll hopefully love the feral wolves, dinosaur trails and mini railway at Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park (15 minutes), or the hands-on encounters with lemurs and meerkats at Exmoor Zoological and Conservation Centre (20 minutes).
