  • Secluded wild meadow camping on a working farm in rural West Sussex
  • A 20-minute drive from the South Downs National Park and Petworth
  • Highland cattle and wildlife on site; pub five minutes’ drive away
Hidden away among 60 acres of wildflower meadows, Cattlestone Farm’s camping field is surrounded by ancient woodland in glorious West Sussex countryside. Here you can choose your own pitch and enjoy a wild-camping vibe that’s spot on for animal-mad active families. The proud custodians of this fourth-generation farm are Alan and Donna, who produce top-quality hay and have introduced Highland cows and a bull – no doubt you’ll see them grazing in neighbouring fields. Other wildlife that you might spot on site include resident deer, buzzards, tawny owls and red kites – and to preserve this magical natural setting, it’s strictly no large parties here please. Well-behaved dogs, on the other hand, are welcome. Simple facilities include showers and washing-up areas at the toilet block, and a decent wifi connection if you can’t quite give up on the outside world. There are numerous public footpaths and bridleways close by, and the farm is flanked by award-winning vineyards, country pubs (the closest is five minutes by car) and historic villages. There are lots of options for eating out within half an hour’s drive, but if you’d rather curl up around the barbecue, stock up on goodies in handy stores and regular farmers’ markets in Petworth (20 minutes’ drive).

Sunrise cabin

Liked: We absolutely loved everything about this place. The luxury Sunrise Shepherds Hut had everything you could want for a tranquil and peaceful stay. Birds singing, deer in the field in the morning, a relaxing outside bath, hot shower, dressing gown and slippers provided. Our host Donna was so friendly and she catered for all our needs, providing us with a delicious vegan cake, oat milk, bread, eggs and a wonderful bottle of bubbly. The Sunrise Shepherds Hut was warm and cozy, the king-size bed with Egyptian cotton sheets was amazingly comfortable. Even though we had foul wet weather it couldn't spoil the couple of days we spent here. We highly recommend a stay at in one of the Shepherds Huts provided at Cattlestone Farm, you won't regret it. Looking forward to booking a stay here again, Carol & Pete.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: What a great little campsite! It's a simple field, with well maintained toilets and showers, covered ot wash area with 2 sinks and a couple of water taps. The staff were lovely. There's a wee white van that drives around between 5 and 6 in the afternoon offering fire bowels and firewood (I didn't need any as I just stayed the night for work in the area). For those that need to know, they were happy with my RTT, I just ed it as a campervan and had no issues. I will definitely return with the family soon.

Local attractions

Hikers can tick off sections of the South Downs Way and walk up to National Trust-owned Devil’s Dyke (35 minutes’ drive) for views across the chalk escarpment of the South Downs National Park (20 minutes). To see a re-wilding initiative successfully at work, walk the permissive trails at Knepp Castle Estate (10 minutes). Exploring historic market towns couldn’t be easier. Petworth has a choice of indie shops in Georgian-era buildings, while Midhurst (35 minutes) has a photogenic mix of architecture from a Norman castle to half-timbered buildings. Stately Arundel (half an hour) is worth a trip for its castle and cathedral, and Chichester (40 minutes) is a clever rainy-day option thanks to the lively schedule at its renowned theatre. Down on the south coast, you’ve also got a choice of destinations. Load everybody in the car and head to the beach at Worthing (25 minutes) for watersports galore and family cycle rides along the promenade. In lively Brighton, you can pick up antique bargains in The Lanes shops or take a guided tour of the colourful and ornate Brighton Pavilion.
