  • Peaceful lakeside setting in Hampshire countryside near Winchester
  • A 10-minute drive to Winchester Cathedral; the New Forest 20 minutes
  • Trout fishing on site; pub and farm shop with café five minutes’ walk
Situated on the outskirts of the historic city of Winchester, close to Junction 9 of the M3 for easy access, Church Paddock centres on a spring-fed fishing lake set in five acres of landscaped ground – and its handful of adults-only camping pitches all overlook the water. You may not be able to bring the kids to this pop-up site (it's a little too close to the water for comfort) but dogs are most certainly welcome. Limited facilities include toilets with hot and cold water (but no showers), and a small utility area with a fridge to keep things fresh and a kettle so you can rustle up a cuppa. There’s plenty of secure car-parking space on site too. On site, you can fish for rainbow trout, and there are a couple of golf courses (10 minutes’ drive) close by, as well as an indoor swimming pool (15 minutes) in case of any rainy days. Filling cooked breakfasts and snacks are available from the wooden hut when the fishery is open, and it’s five minutes’ walk to Headbourne Worthy village for a well-stocked farm shop (a good place to pick up supplies for the barbecue) and a café for a quick caffeine fix. Close by, you can stroll to a pub serving yummy food (also five minutes) – and don’t forget that historic Winchester (10 minutes’ drive) also has enough dining options to keep you going for days.

Local attractions

The ancient mellow-stone city of Winchester (10 minutes’ drive) deserves a day’s exploration; you can tour the Gothic-era cathedral, check out the priceless 12th-century Winchester Bible, and stick with the history theme for a stroll around Wolvesey Castle. Coming bang up to date, Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium (10 minutes) has 4D films and interactive science shows. If you’re on holiday to escape city life, head to the New Forest National Park (20 minutes) for scenic strolls through heath and woodland, with the chance to see wild ponies, or perhaps a potter around the shiny vintage cars in the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu (40 minutes). The South Downs National Park (10 minutes) also has its fair share of challenging walks over glorious chalk downs. Or how about seeing the lie of the land from a vintage train? Pick up the Watercress Line at Alresford Railway Station (15 minutes) for a gentle meander through the Hampshire countryside – and there are plenty of themed events and dinners on board too.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Nice location, quiet adults only site. Liked the little 'kitchen' area with kettle, microwave & fridge. Lovely lake, we enjoyed sitting in the evening watching fish jumping and the swans. WC was clean and tidy. Lovely place to stay for 1 or 2 nights.

Disliked Hand towel in the wc was not changed for the 3 days we were there and was very damp and smelly

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked An oasis of tranquility and so accessible. Jamie was very welcoming to myself and my large GSD! I was able to choose my pitch - spoilt for choice and had a wonderfully peaceful stay. The toilet was clean and very roomy and the bar area has a fridge as well as an electric kettle for morning coffee. I enjoyed watching the fly fishing but my dog got overexcited so I had to leave earlier than planned.

Disliked Nothing - even the traffic noise ‘disappears’

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Everything. Beautiful campsite, great hosts, easy going, allow camp fires. Only very vague slight thing was not having a shower. But we knew this in advance and planned accordingly which is all that matters. Honestly an absolutely wonderful campsite. We will be back!

Liked Beautiful location, the lake was stunning. The grass pitch was lovely and the place was incredibly peaceful.

Disliked Would be nice to have a sign for drinking water, wasn't quite sure if any of the taps around the washing up facility were mains.
