  • New Forest site set over 65 acres of fields and woodland
  • On the outskirts of Lyndhurst; Lymington 20 minutes away by car
  • Back to basics site with views of a Georgian manor

The New Forest's fab patchwork of moorland, woodland glades and heath is ripe for exploring at Foxlease, a gorgeous Georgian estate on the outskirts of the village of Lyndhurst. Make this low-key Hampshire site your base if you're pleased by the prospect of striking out on trips around 200 nature-packed square miles of national park.

Originally gifted to the girlguiding movement back in the 1920s, this place has sorted generations of adventurous young ladies with open-air stays in a central New Forest setting. Nowadays, Foxlease also welcomes families, D of E groups and other friendly guests – and yes, that does include the boys.

And while not being a fully paid-up Scout or Guide won't stop you getting the most out of these green grounds, any past outdoorsy experience certainly help with all the alfresco cooking and cleaning you're bound to get up to during your stay (Foxlease's basic facilities are on hand to help you sort everyday matters like these).

If you never quite achieved your food prep badge, Lyndhurst village centre (10 minutes' walk) has a bevy of cafés and restaurants (including takeaway options like Thai, Indian and fish and chips). Bikes can also be hired, bought or fixed up here if you've plans to set out on two-wheeled wanders.

Local attractions

Lyndhurst is home to a visitor centre and museum that'll give you the lowdown on the forest's medieval roots and modern-day wildlife. Once clued up about verderers, agisters and those shaggy New Forest ponies, set out for jaunts around Beaulieu (15 minutes' drive), Brockenhurst (10 minutes) or Fritham (20 minutes), each of which has a heap of handsome car-free trails and waymarked bike paths.

Travel a tad further south for access to the spectacular Solent coast: shingly seaside vistas at Lepe Country Park (30 minutes) and Hurst Castle Spit (30 minutes) can be combined with harbourside strolls and salty lido swims in Lymington (20 minutes), where you can also board ferries over to the Isle of Wight (crossing time around 40 minutes).

If the kids find that these simpler seaside pleasures are not quite up to the mark, indulge them with a day out at Moors Valley Country Park (25 minutes), where they can dangle from a high ropes course or gawp at giant wooden animal sculptures. Moors Valley also supplies a platform to those keen on steam trains – there's scope for narrow-gauge locomotion at the park, plus access to the Castleman Trailway, a cyclable stretch of decommissioned line that runs down to Poole Harbour in Dorset.
