  • Small CAMC members-only site in the West Pennine Moors, Lancashire
  • Blackburn 20 minutes’ drive; Ribble Steam Railway & Museum 40 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; next to a golf course and a 10-minute walk from a pub
Small, peaceful, family-run and a handy 10 minutes’ drive from Chorley: that’s Buttercup Meadow Certificated Location, a top spot for members of the Caravan and Motorhome Club. The non-electric gravel pitches here don't have lots of fancy facilities (chemical disposal is pretty much the only on-site amenity), but there are plenty of other perks: you can bring your dog along for the ride, for starters. On top of that, deer roam in the field at the bottom of the site, especially in the evening. And finally, you’re on the edge of the West Pennine Moors here. Just look around you at the splendid landscape: all moorlands and woodlands, with distant views of Great Hill (10 minutes) and Winter Hill (35 minutes), both with excellent trails to explore. But there’s plenty to do in the area besides hill walking and climbing. Buttercup Meadow sits next to a nine-hole golf course (it's a five-minute walk to the clubhouse). After practising your swing on the green, treat yourself to a well-poured pint and some home-cooked food in Higher Wheelton’s village pub (10 minutes on foot); or make your dog happy with a walk along the banks of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, which runs just beyond Higher Wheelton.

Non-electric gravel motorhome pitch (members only)

Liked Lovely campsite . Large pitches . Deer in the next door field . Short walk down to the Liverpool / Leeds canal , which is great for dog walking alongside the canal . Walking down in the opposite direction you reach a woodland park / lake , so my dog Rowan was spoilt for the choice of local dog walks.Chloe , the owner is very helpful and gave advice about local pubs, walks etc . We will definitely be back .

Local attractions

You might head into Chorley (10 minutes’ drive) for the shops or the restaurants, but this market town is well worth a few hours of your time. While you're there, check out Astley Hall, a 16th-century mansion decorated with colourful tapestries, period furniture and elaborate stuccos. Its grounds include walled and sensory gardens, as well as large areas of woodland. In Blackburn (20 minutes), the Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery explores the area’s industrial heritage with textile machines and other artefacts; among the highlights of the Ancient Egypt collection are a mummy and a copy of the Rosetta Stone. On the outskirts of the town, Witton Country Park is home to Go Ape Blackburn, with treetop adventure courses. Head towards Preston, stopping first at the Owl & Bird of Prey Sanctuary (25 minutes) to admire a flight display, and then at the Ribble Steam Railway & Museum (40 minutes), with its large display of vintage steam, diesel and electric locomotives. Depending on the time of year, it’s also possible to arrange lunch and afternoon tea onboard.
