Things to do

  • Glamping pods on a working farm in the Lake District National Park
  • A 10-minute drive to the Lakes Aquarium; 20 to South Lakes Safari Zoo
  • Football field and communal barn; barbecue and firepit per pod
Like the sound of a really rather special glamping experience in the Lake District? Give Abbots Reading Farm a go. Their octolodges – natty camping pods sleeping up to six people – are well-insulated and cosy whatever the weather, and have spectacular views of the Rusland Valley and Coniston foothills. Based on a South Lakes farm, the lodges have lots of home comforts, such as beds with memory-foam mattresses, plenty of storage for your gear, a fridge, kettle and microwave for making simple meals and a TV for your downtime. Electricity keeps all your devices powered up as well as heating the units. All you need to bring is sleeping bags and pillows, cooking equipment and eating utensils – and an all-important torch for finding the loos after dark. Family-friendly and communal facilities include a heated shower block, pot-washing and laundry areas, a barn (covered for wet-weather days) with picnic tables and benches for barbecues, and ping pong tables. Outside there’s a large play area with a toddler climbing frame and a soccer field with nets. Each pod also comes with its personal charcoal barbecue and firepit. Get out and about in the Lake District National Park by day, and come back on clear evenings to watch the sunset from your balcony and look out for birdlife including frequent visitors curlews, kingfishers, herons, red kites and owls. Around the hills and fields of the farm you may also spot otters and red or roe deer. The local town of Ulverston (10 minutes’ drive) has everything you need for stocking up on provisions.

A gem of a place! Peaceful, lovely views, and spotless. Tony the owner is a legend, always going the extra mile, and his Highland cattle are a treat. Cosy accommodation, great facilities. Perfect for exploring, and folk can't wait to come back.

Camping pod (four person)

Liked Me and my sister absolutely loved it here. The cabins were basic but perfect for our short trip and very clean.
The owner Tony was great. So friendly and although he was clearly busy he still made time to show us his Highland Cattle.

Camping pod (four person)

Liked An amazing place to visit. We had pod #5. Large clean wood pod with microwave, fridge, kettle and TV. Plenty of space under the beds to store clothes and personal belongings. There is even a bottle rack. Bathroom in a separate building clean, cleaned daily by the owner. Next to it is a car park. From the terrace there is a beautiful view of the nearby mountains. Children can play football on the field and later in the evening you can sit next to fire pit listening to nature. The owner very nice, passionately telling about the area. We had the chance to see the owner Scottish cows during sunset. We are a family that loves to hike and walks so we spent most of our time in the nearby area exploring the mountain trails, waterfalls, caves, lake cruise as well as the seaside beach. The location gave us so much satisfaction that we will definitely come back to this place. Thank you, kind regards. Izzy

The farm - Beautiful landscape and fantastic views from the pods.

The pods - Cosy and comfortable.

Facilities - Toilets and showers were immaculate. The big barn with ping pong table and the field was great for the kids to run about.. But most of all they loved rolling down the hills!!

Harris - Amazing Harris the Highland Bull was very entertaining amd Tony the host took us up to the field to see him and the kids got to brush his fabulous hair

Liked Loved our 3 nights staying in the octolodges. Great clean facilities and the lodges were spacious with plenty storage for our things. Tony the owner was great and gave us lots of information about the local area. Our highlight was Tony taking us up to the see the Highland cattle and the children were able to pet and brush the Bull. We will definitely be back

Camping pod (five person)

Liked An amazing place to stay, highly recommend to everyone no matter what you are looking for. Peaceful place, lovely walks around and close enough to shops for you to be able to pick up any necessities. Tony was the nicest person you could meet going above and beyond to make sure not only your stay with them is perfect but also your days out. Tony also took time out of his busy day to take us to see his Highland bull and highland cows, we were mesmerised and will forever remember this experience. 10/10 for cleanliness for both the octolodges and the toilet/shower facilities. Perfect for families that would like to enjoy a getaway, plenty to keep the children entertained in the barn! Thank you Tony for a wonderful stay which was much needed before the start of another school year!
