  • Bespoke hut in Cumbria’s countryside, a five-minute drive from Kendal
  • Lake District National Park 15 minutes’ drive; Morecambe 35 minutes
  • Private swimming pool with decked area; gorgeous hill views
IIf you’re in need of some serious ‘me time’ to recharge your batteries, or maybe longing for an off-grid experience (but with modern conveniences such as shops and restaurants within fairly easy access), head to Dolly The Shepherd’s Hut. This enchanting accommodation sits at the bottom of the owners’ sprawling garden (so your privacy is ensured), a five-minute drive from Kendal, along the A6. Lake District National Park is 15 minutes’ drive away, and its splendid landscape can already be admired here, with gentle hills all around. The hut is a bespoke little jewel, with a well-planned interior divided into a sleeping area, a kitchenette and a living area. So far, so cosy, and evenings spent catching up on your reading in front of the woodburner sure sound like a peaceful way to spend your time here. But there’s more. Dolly also has its own organic pool just a few metres away – just the ticket for those who fancy a spot of wild swimming in their quest for absolute relaxation. After your morning swim, the poolside decked area (with comfortable seating) is a top spot to take in expansive vistas of the Cumbrian landscape. Please note that all guests at Dolly The Shepherd’s Hut are required to be members of the Campfire Companions Club; membership is free and can be obtained upon booking.

Local attractions

National Trust - Sizergh (15 minutes’ drive) is a centuries-old property with an estate that includes orchards, ancient woodland and wetlands. Just a few minutes’ drive further south, on the banks of the River Kent, Levens Hall is renowned for its topiary garden, with clipped hedges in the shape of geometric forms and chess pieces. The shores of Lake Windermere (20 minutes) are dotted with attractions and activities providers, such as Windermere Outdoor Adventure Centre, for paddleboarding and kayaking. Brockhole on Windermere is an elegant Arts and Crafts villa with splendid lakeside views, or head to National Trust - Stagshaw Gardens for colourful displays of azaleas. For a day at the seaside, Morecambe (35 minutes) has an expansive sandy beach hemmed in at its northern end by a stone jetty. Take a picture next to the statue of comedian Eric Morecambe, catch a show at the Morecambe Winter Gardens, or hire a bike and cycle part of the Way of the Roses, a coast-to-coast trail.
