  • Family-run hill farm campsite five minutes’ drive from Boot in Eskdale
  • West Lakes Adventure five minutes’ drive; Muncaster Castle 15 minutes
  • Lake District walks straight from the off-grid, dog-friendly pitches
When you’re after spectacular mountain views on an almost wild Lake District camping break, Hollin Head Campsite is a top contender. Set on a family-run hill farm running a flock of Herdwick sheep, the spacious pitches sit in a tree-sheltered camping meadow by the side of the burbling River Esk. There are scenic walks along the Esk from the pitches, and numerous fell and mountain hikes right from the campsite gate. If you like the sound of a pint at the end of your day, there’s a pub within five minutes’ stroll, and when foodie supplies are running low, you can stock up on pretty much everything at the local shop in Eskdale (five minutes’ drive). Well-behaved dogs are more than welcome to accompany you on your Lake District adventure, but please keep them on leads at all times while on site, due to the proximity of the sheep. Small firepits and barbecues are allowed by your pitch, just be sure to raise them off the ground to prevent the grass getting burnt. And as this peaceful, no-frills site is firmly off-grid, please note that there are no showers or electric hook-ups; simple facilities include clean portable loos, a drinking-water tap and recycling bins.

What customers say

Lovely riverside spot, peaceful with great views & walks. Portaloos spotless, owner Liz a gem. Basic but great value, though some pitches are far from loos, and farm noise can occur. Highly recommended for its beauty and charm.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked I never write reviews but Liz definitely needs one. The views were amazing and it was extremely quiet and peaceful. The river was great to play in too. The portaloos were immaculate and they weren't too far of a walk and we were at the furthest point from them. Liz was super friendly and helpful. It was great to hear that she never has more than 15 pitches so you will never be really close to anyone else. There are loads of lovely walks from the campsite. We had a fantastic time and will definitely go back. . My mobile phone worked too, if that's a concern of yours. If you want a quiet site with gorgeous views I would highly recommend.

Liked Liz is a fantastic host, the campsite is a beautiful, magical place with the river running through it, never had toilets so clean and really appreciated that, liz cleans them every hour, she goes above and beyond, we advise buying her fresh eggs as they are delicious!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked A great out of the way location with a few good hills and the river esk flowing right through it.
Great host as we arrived and showed us to our spot.
The facilities are basic which is another reason why I picked this site, but the porter loos were spotless the whole weekend and that was a nice change for a basic site so well done guys 😁👌 keep up the great work and we will be back 👌

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Loved the location as it was near to tongue pot . Also a gorgeous little stream going into a river so we had a morning swim and kayak which was perfect as we didn’t fancy going off site for a dip.

Disliked Toilets and water tap are right at the top of the site and we were at the bottom. Long way to walk at night.
Traffic (mainly tractors) kept us awake all night as it’s next to road! Very noisy and really bright lights. No sleep at all

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Am sorry to read this unfortunately our toilet company can’t get down the little track to empty toilets so that’s why thay are at the top unfortunately water tap has to be at top! The tractors where in the valley late last night as it’s that time of year to cut the grass for silage farmers need to get as much done when the weather is right unfortunately that can be late (this dosnt happen every week! ) the road is usually very quite pleased you enjoyed the river this morning liz

Truly special find.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Loved everything about this place.
We will definitely be back!
We booked a 7 night stay, as we have our own shower and the site has loos.
The river is stunning and there are so many beautiful walks from the site - just ask the owner for ideas, both of her suggestions were 10/10 trails!

Disliked Nothing to dislike! It’s a working farm so lots of sheep and cattle, it’s run by hard working wholesome people and you cannot complain about a thing!
