Christmas Farm: View from the entrance

General

  • Very small campsite on a working organic farm in Northumberland
  • A quarter of an hour's drive to Northumberland Country Zoo or Cragside
  • On-site selection of local produce; a mile from the nearest pubs

Christmas Farm is a very small campsite set in the grounds of a working organic farm in rural Northumberland. A quiet part of one of the farm's paddocks has been fenced off for guests, where you'll have fantastic views over the local countryside and plenty of fresh country air.

The site is roughly a mile from the small village Longframlington, where amenities include two pubs, a café and a local shop. For other supplies, Christmas Farm has an on-site pop-up farm shop (roughly 400 metres from the pitching area) where you can pick up organic fruit and veg, meat, milk, eggs, bread, cakes and other goodies. Bundles of logs and sticks for your campfire can also be bought here.

Christmas Farm is inland and has easy access to lots of scenic spots in the Coquet Valley, but the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can also be reached within roughly 20 minutes' drive.

Please note that this is a quiet spot that has a very small number of pitches. The site asks that guests respect the peace and quiet of others who may be staying here.

Please note

This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Group bookings of 4 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Group bookings of 8 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Guests under the age of 3 are not allowed on site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Minimum spacing of 5 metres between pitches.

Absolutely everything. Camping as a single parent with two young children (5 and 7) could have been a bit stressful but Beth ensured our wood and items from the farm shop were ready to collect on arrival. Everyone on the farm was super friendly and happy to chat to the kids (who are obsessed with all things farm related).
We had a paddock to ourselves so the kids had plenty of space to burn off energy and they loved walking down to see the chickens every day.
With a compost toilet and water tap in the field it was as close to wild camping as possible with young children and they loved the adventure.
Perfect spot for a stop over in the middle of a longer trip or to spend a few nights there as there is plenty to do nearby.
We went to Northumberland Zoo and had a great day before having a BBQ watching the sunset behind the hills. Perfect!

From the manager...

Hi Leah,

I'm really happy you had a good stay, sorry the shops were shut..rural life! Its like being back in the 60's sometimes but ok once you know about it so we will try to add the shop hours to the listing to make sure people know to bring stuff or get to the shop in time.

Hope we see you again sometime,

Lee

Poor value for money and not an honest description of facilities08/17/2021

It was the only place available for our dates. It was not too far from spectacular coast and beaches

    Disliked:

It was way overpriced for the facilities provided.
The description on pitchup neglected to say the only facilities were a compost loo, water and elsan tank. There was nowhere to wash hands after visiting the toilet. The elsan tank was high up meaning you have to lift the toilet cassette up to pour away. The field was ok, but not large enough for 3 units as described. The hosts did not ask if everything was ok, or even welcome us. The track to the field was heavily potholed and the bins up the lane were not indicated.

From the manager...

Hi Nancy, i'm genuinely sorry you didn't have a good stay.

I think the pitch up description says compost loo and standpipe, we assumed people would wash hands at the standpipe which is why we placed it next to the loo. If we had more facilities we would list them not hope people assume we have more but don't want to brag about it.

I'm very sorry that no one came to meet you or was there awaiting your arrival and that the field wasn't big enough, we have been trying to make sure everyone is welcomed at some point during the stay and shown into a suitable space however we do all have jobs and can't be around everyday.

Hopefully you'll find smoother roads, more attentive hosts and better value for money on the rest of your stays, Lee

We absolutely loved staying at the farm for an overnight. It's a lovely location, not too far from the mainroad, perfect for staying in a campervan as you still have access to compostable loo and water main. A walk from the village pubs and if you feel like ourselves you can get spoiled by the hosts and have your cooked organic supper delivered to your camper! Ours was delish! In the morning and it was Sunday, the farm shop was opened and we stocked up on eggs and meats and veg - all gown on the farm - and some other goodies- for the rest of our trip. This spot comes highly recommended!

Lovely location with an excellent farm shop on site. Bring your own TP!
Dogs are welcome but be aware, there are free-range chickens in the field with the campers so keep them on leads!

    Disliked:

Considering the enormous paddock, the pitches were far too close together, with everyone bunched together in one corner, barely enough room for everyone to have a car and tent.
Toilet is a large hole in some plywood (composting type) which is good for the environment but not for small children who I literally had to hang onto to stop them falling into a deep pit of sewage - actually quite dangerous.

From the manager...

Hi,

Thanks for the review. Particularly the toilet bit, when i built the composting loo i just measured the hole in a normal toilet seat and never considered that kids would fall into it as ours have never fallen into a normal toilet. Its definitely something I'll try to rectify as we, of course, want everyone to be safe.

And we agree about the pitches being too close together, I measured out 8m between them when I marked it out as that's what is suggested but we've normally only had a few people at a time so it's never been a problem. At the weekend we had all 10 pitches taken and it wasn't great so we've reduced the pitches available to 5 so people have more space and its less stressful all round.

Dogs are meant to be on leads at all times as the terms agreed via pitch up bookings. Not just for the occasional free range hens but for everyone's enjoyment and safety whilst on holiday.
