  • Co. Durham site five minutes' drive from Barnard Castle
  • Just outside the North Pennines National Landscape for scenic walks
  • Attractive rural location with easy access direct from the A66
Coming to Co. Durham for active adventures, a bit of exploring with the family or just some rural relaxation? Whatever it is that brings you this way, Gallows Hill is a great place to settle down for a while. This small site is about five minutes’ drive from the town of Barnard Castle, and has fabulous views over the surrounding Teesdale hills. Direct access from the A66 means that it’s nice and easy to find, and also handily located for getting out and about to whatever activities you’ve chosen to fill your day with. And what might those activities be? Well, you’ll be just outside the North Pennines National Landscape and Yorkshire Dales National Park so there are plenty of scenic places nearby for a walk, a bike ride, some climbing or other outdoor activities. Historic attractions and museums are close by as well, and it won’t take all that long to get to Durham city centre or the spectacular shows at Kynren. Closer to home, Barnard Castle has (aside from the castle, of course) numerous shops, supermarkets, takeaways and places to eat. Pick up supplies while you’re there and you’ll be able to have a campfire to keep you warm during an evening on site. Simple facilities on site include separate men’s and women’s toilets and showers (all cleaned regularly) and a small play area to help tire the kids out ready for bed.

What customers say

A grand little spot, grand views, handy to the A66, short hop to Barnard Castle. Lee's a grand fella, toilets and showers are spotless with hot water. A bit of road noise and parking is tight for some, but great value and a peaceful place to stay. Play area for the nippers.

Non-electric grass and gravel motorhome pitch

Liked Nice site with great views. Well kept facilities with hot running water. Good walks into Barnard Castle direct from the site. Lee the owner left out stoves for us to light fires under a glorious starry night. Second time I've stayed here, this time with friends.

Disliked Location close to the dual carriageway but made up with the views.

Non-electric grass and gravel motorhome pitch

Liked Helpful info received from the owner before arrival and was communicative by text when I couldn’t find the tap or didn’t know where to park. (The are two taps despite a previous reviewer saying there are none).

I thought I’d hate the noise of the A66 but overnight it didn’t disturb me.

Seems quite level everywhere.

Lovely views looking north

Disliked Maybe I misunderstood the description but I booked this thinking it was going to be gravel rather than grass as it had rained so much and I didn’t want to get stuck. There’s a gravel-ish track but all pitches are on grass. I stayed in the track tbh as only me there.

Disappointed that the site is quite scruffy and in need of some tlc, so I thought the price too high.

The A66 noise meant I didn’t want to sit outside.

Non-electric grass and gravel motorhome pitch

Liked Flat pitch, amazing view. Can walk to Barnard Castle in 50 mins from the site.

Disliked Toilets and shower could do with an upgrade, they are very basic and hot water in short supply, very noisy as off A66. Need a watering can to fill water up as no access to tap other than on foot.

Non-electric grass and gravel motorhome pitch

Liked Small site around 7 good sized pitches & 3 statics. Good toilet & shower facilities. Really easy to find off the a66. Close to Barnard Castle. Brilliant views & horses in the next field. Very informative text from host before arrival. Phone signal is good here too.

Disliked Noise from a66 but is to be expected, potentially a little over priced for the location but not for the facilities it offered. Green fencing between the camping pitches and 3 statics was unsightly but I understand why it was there.
