City sightseeing break or hilltop rural retreat? You can have both when you choose to stay at Parque Campismo da Penha. Set atop the wooded summit of Monte da Penha, this mountain campsite is surrounded by forest and overlooks the UNESCO-listed historic city of Guimarães (15 minutes’ drive). Hilltop pitches are tucked under the shade of the tree canopy – so everything stays pleasant and cool in summer – and there’s also a communal shelter with a fully equipped kitchen and a lounge with TV, fireplace and cosy sofas for use in cooler seasons. Once you’re all settled in, spend leisurely hours around the swimming pool with the kids, or go off adventuring (taking any accompanying four-legged friends with you, of course) to spot the massive granite boulders scattered around the forest floor. From the site, there’s also direct access to a centuries-old pilgrimage route, taking in the Gruta Nossa Senhora de Lourdes (five minutes’ walk) and art deco-style Penha Sanctuary (10 minutes). Alternatively, spend urban days out exploring the sights of Guimarães – much the quickest way to get down there from your mountaintop base is by the Teleférico de Penha cable car.

A magical, peaceful mountain escape with awesome views & cable car access to Guimarães. Staff are super friendly & helpful. Facilities are clean, though a bit dated. Pool's a hit! Ground can be dusty, some minor noise. Overall, a great stay, many plan to return.

Liked The most magical place we have been to for a long time , the top of a cool mountain with trailers and paths close to the camp site and cable car down to town for 5 euros return.
Extremely clean pool and friendly staff .

Liked Great reception from friendly staff. We were travelling with friends so we had booked ahead for our two motorhomes - they had reserved the pitches for us and made us feel really welcome. It's a tricky drive up the hill to get to the sire but it's worth it. Fantastic location almost at the top of the hill - from where the views over the city are simply fantastic. And the best bit - there's a cable car from around the corner all the way down the hill into the heart of the old city of Guimaraes - amazing!

Liked Beautiful location with great access to Guimeraes via cable car. Peaceful site situated within the sanctuary of Penha. Very helpful staff and a great price too. Several restaurants within walking distance (5-10min max)

Disliked Parking for motorhomes was a bit tight. We arrived early *(I am glad we did)!

Disliked habia un grupo que tenian la carvana fija que hacian muchisimo ruido hasta bastante tarde.
no habia papel en los baños.

Explored the pilgrimage spots on Monte da Penha and keen to see more spectacular religious landmarks? Head for the Convento de Santa Marinha da Costa (10 minutes’ drive) to admire its fancy baroque-era facade and intricate stone carving in the interior. Another famed pilgrimage spot is the ornate sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte in Braga (40 minutes), approached by a wildly OTT stone staircase, or you can wind back the years to Iron Age times with a look around another evocative site – the restored round houses and Pedra Formosa burial chamber at Citânia de Briteiros (half an hour). Keep the cultural theme going in lovely Guimarães (15 minutes) and have a potter around the decorative-art collections in the striking 15th-century Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, or a climb up to the battlements of the medieval castle for views over the town and back to Monte da Penha. History and heritage attended to, take a stroll around the photogenic cobbled streets of the old city centre, then seek out Largo da Oliveira square; it’s time to settle back in a terrace café with a glass of chilled local vinho verde.
