- Peaceful and uncrowded Charente-Maritime site a mile from Saint-Sornin
- Royan and Île d’Oléron within a half-hour drive for days at the coast
- Bar/pizzeria and pétanque on site; walks and bike rides close by
Some people like their campsites to be packed with colourful facilities and lots of activities to keep everyone occupied throughout their stay, while others like to steer clear of such things and prioritise peaceful open space. If you’re in the latter group, a stay at Camping Le Valerick should suit you rather well.
This Charente-Maritime site has been designed to help guests have a relaxed rural break in a quiet site that never feels busy or noisy. Guests often comment on the warm and friendly atmosphere as well as the lovely setting in a wooded area about a mile from Saint-Sornin.
While this site doesn’t have things like a waterpark or a kids’ club, it’s not completely without facilities – you’ll be able to play games of table tennis and pétanque, let the kids run about at the playground and sort out easy food and drinks at the bar/pizzeria. There’s also a shop on site, along with other handy amenities including wifi, a launderette and a bathroom block.
Saint-Sornin is a small place with just a church and a café; for shops and other places to eat you’ll need to look to other nearby towns and villages. The surrounding area is a fabulously rural one, with lots of places to hike or cycle through the marshes and alongside canals. Royan, Marennes, the Île d’Oléron and lots of gorgeous Atlantic beaches can also be on your schedule while you’re here.

Local attractions
This is the place for you if you like low-key rural activities – nearby you’ll be able to walk or cycle through the marshes, do a bit of fishing and stop at intriguing little places like the Tour de Broue and Maison de Broue (both five minutes’ drive/10 minutes’ cycle). Other ways to take in the scenery include treetop trails at Coolongalook Adventure Park and more sedate rides on Le Train des Mouettes (both 15 minutes’ drive).
La Ferme de Magné (five minutes) is a nice option for families with younger kids, while historic sights like L'Abbaye de Sablonceaux (10 minutes) and Chateau de la Roche Courbon (25 minutes) have plenty of interest for all ages. And of course you can’t miss a day in Royan (25 minutes), whether you hit the beach, try the go-kart circuit or explore Planet Exotica.
Royan also has boat trips to various islands and over to the tip of the Médoc peninsula. The Île d’Oléron (half an hour) is another great option for a coastal trip, with some gorgeous beaches and bike paths as well as oyster farms, wineries and trips to Fort Boyard.
