- Peaceful garden park in the French Flanders countryside
- A 15-minute drive from Bergues; central Dunkirk 25 minutes
- Four-hectare residential site with smartly-furnished accommodation
Taking a breather before boarding boats for Britain? Or, au contraire, travelling through the tunnel and in need of a launchpad into France? Le Vert Village, a gorgeously green site in the Nord department, could well be the place for you to stop and smell the roses.
As its name suggests, this place has no shortage of vegetation, with well-kept garden surrounds that stretch over four hectares of countryside. The spacious and bright self-catering accommodation here presents you with ample opportunities to admire those leafy views, coming with spacious outdoor terraces where you can while away the hours overlooking all kinds of relaxing flora.
Le Vert Village may sit squarely within France, but the food, art and architecture of the surrounding area have an undeniable Low Countries feel to them. Belgium-bound jaunts are very much possible here: Ostend and Ypres are both within an hour from site by car. But you won't need to cross any borders to get a fill of Flanders' far-famed highlights: on the French side, the Flemish-style town of Bergues (15 minutes' drive) has a centuries-old belfry that wouldn't look out of place in Bruges, while high-quality local beers will have all but the stubbornest of wine fans queuing up for more.
Want to stock up on beers and bites? It's a 10-minute drive to a selection of sizeable supermarkets.

Local attractions
Bergues (15 minutes' drive) is a dainty spot indeed, with canals, medieval churches and an ancient abbey all creating a fab backdrop for those stepping out on leisurely strolls. It also hosts a bustling Monday market where visiting foodies can pick up French and Flemish faves and listen to the belfry's carillon chiming between 11 and midday.
This site (quite rightly) makes a big deal of being green, but the big briny blue is also within easy reach. Dunkirk (25 minutes) is visit-worthy for being the site of the historic Second World War evacuation of British troops, but also for sandy Malo-les-Bains beach, a handsome harbour and a fine art museum that houses paintings in the Flemish, French and Italian style.
Also at the seaside is Ostend (an hour), one of Belgium's best-loved beach resorts where you can take trams out to rural coastal villages or stick around for the Mercator (a floating museum) or the neo-Gothic Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. While you're out this way, you could also call in at Ypres (around 45 minutes) for more wartime history or to visit Bellewaerde (50 minutes), Belgium's oldest theme park.
