Local attractions
Millions of people visit Lourdes every year, to see its Massabielle grotto, its caves and its castle: the town is second only to Paris in terms of annual visitor numbers and attracts visitors from all over the world. The Torchlight Marian Procession, held from spring to October, is the most famed thing to do for pilgrims who visit: join it each night near the main grotto.
The caves of Bétharram/ Grottes de Bétharram are another famed sight in the region and are a 20-minute drive from Camping Le Vieux Berger. Cave connoisseurs can explore them by boat, by train or by foot along the 2.8 km underground walk: personally we rather fancy all three...
If you're a hiker type, get up to the top of the Pic du Jer for spectacular views over Lourdes, Pau, Tarbes, the Argelès-Gazost Valley and the Hautes-Pyrénées (you'll see the big cross lit up at the mountaintop if you're in the area at night). Not a hiker type? Take the Pic du Jer Funicular 950 metres up to pass over the mountain instead.
