Sea views

General

  • Seafront site five minutes' drive from Ambon
  • Sea views around the site, and direct access to the beach
  • Play area with trampoline and giant bouncy castle

A Brittany coast with sea views and direct access to the beach? That’s got to be a resounding oui, oui, oui merci.

Owners Brigitte and Frédérique certainly selected a smashing spot when they came to set up Camping de Cromenac’h – at this friendly site five minutes’ drive from the shops and restaurants of Ambon you can start sniffing the sea air as soon as you wake, before running straight out onto the little beach to frolic in the waves before you’ve even breakfasted should you wish.

If you’re the kind that can’t function before brekkie, you’ll be chuffed to hear that fresh bread and pastries are delivered each morning in high season for pre-swim feasting (you could always compromise by taking them to the beach, of course). Barbecues can be borrowed for your other eats, and a takeaway serves up pizzas, crêpes and the like on summer evenings.

A ping pong table, pétanque court and library with books and board games should keep you busy when you’re away from the beach, and there’s a playground, trampoline and bouncy castle to cater to tiddlers’ tastes. When you’re ready for more beach action, there are plenty more sandy spots to sprawl and splash on along the stretch of coast around Damgan, 10 minutes’ drive away.

Right next to the beach. Our pitch looked over the sea and was close to all amenities on the site.
Coastal path running along site in both directions.

    Disliked:

Showers had a bit of a smell to them. As with all the sites we visited in France there was no hot water or plug in sink so that my fiancé could have a decent wet shave.
No on site shop but Lidl 10 mins away.

    Proximity to sea

    Disliked:

On arrival we were given a pitch and we said we thought it was too small as we had stated when booking we had a large caravan and towing vehicle.
The office said there was no alternative as they were fully booked.
We managed to squeeze on the pitch which was 7mtrs by 7.8mtrs.
There was barely any grass on the pitch as it was totally covered by trees, so no sun ! The separating hedges were like scrub, so no privacy.
We were not able to eat outside as there was so much debris falling from the trees all the time. No room to put an awning up....
The pitch backed onto a public access road to the beach, so was busy all the time with vehicles and people walking past. You had to cross this public access to get to the showers and toilets, they were cleanish, but on the adjacent site.
After 3 nights I asked again if they had another pitch only to be told they were still fully booked.
We noted at least 3 + pitches that were vacant from when we had arrived, which were larger, grassy and little tree covering.
After 4 nights we gave up and moved to another campsite, we had booked for 10 so it was a very expensive , short stay for almost 200€ .
On a positive note the access to the beach was good and there were some nice coastal walks directly from the campsite.
Having holidayed with a caravan in France for the past 40 years this is not a site we will be returning to.
    Very disappointing!

From the manager...

Bonjour Susan,

Local attractions

Having a beach at the end of your garden is admittedly mighty handy, but as this part of the world is so well endowed with fab beaches it’d be a shame to limit yourself to just the one. A good starting point is the four-kilometre stretch of soft sands in Damgan (10 minutes away); a tad more driving will take you to Rouvran (20 minutes) to scrabble around for shellfish or Penvins (25 minutes) to join the watersports crowd catching the wind and waves.

If you’re in search of somewhere for a seaside stroll, local tourist offices can sort you out with maps to follow over 100 kilometres of waymarked trails, taking in vineyards, ancient standing stones and scenic views along the way.

Leave the coast behind for a bit (don’t worry, it’ll still be there later…) to escort les enfants on day trips to Branféré zoo (20 minutes’ drive), the Brittany Prehistory Park (35 minutes) or the medieval-themed activities at Château de Suscinio; there’s also a spectacular sound and light show here on balmy summer nights.
