  • Family- and couple-friendly quiet site in the famed Tronçais Forest
  • Direct access to the Étang de Pirot for carp fishing
  • Sandy beach two kilometres away; bar with spacious terrace on site
Fishing as well as foliage? Flow along here. Excellent Auvergne site Camping Les Ecossais is in the lushly dense Tronçais Forest (hailed by some as the handsomest oak woodland in all of Europe) – and is right by the angling haven of the carp-stuffed Étang de Pirot. You'll need a permit to fish here, but bagging one is simple indeed: just amble along to the site reception. Sand fans are also well sorted at this peaceful site, as it's only a couple of kilometres to the local beach. Around the scenic surroundings, the Allier department is one of mountains, valleys and peaks, where cycling, fishing, hiking, via ferrata, climbing and paragliding are all on offer. You'll need a break after all that, so take time for hours on the spacious terrace of the Camping Les Ecossais bar for drinks, coffee or ice cream – or find a place under the trees for picnics sourced in local commune Isle-et-Bardais (about 15 minutes' wander away). Once fed and watered, while away some hours at the miniature golf and tennis, the playground for energetic enfants, and the pétanque court where informal tournaments often take place in summer. Off site and when it's time to dig into regional culture and history, Souvigny is 45 minutes' drive away and department capital Moulins 55 minutes.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Beautiful spot - especially with sun shining on the lake in the morning. Good facilities. Gorgeous area, in middle of forest. Bar/reception area seemed nice.

Disliked: Felt a little too isolated - we seemed to be only ones on site and reception was closed when we arrived (admittedly after 6pm). But that’s just because it’s the end of the season. Would be lovely with a few more people there.

Local attractions

After all that fishing, and forest hiking, and possibly some climbing and paragliding, set off around ye olde sights of Allier and Auvergne. Moulins, set on the Allier river, is a must: it's home to a spectacular 15th-century cathedral and the famed National Centre of Costume and Scenography with its thousands of costumes. Hillside town Souvigny is an official Grand Site of the Auvergne, mainly because it was once the capital of the Bourbonnais region and to this day is stuffed with old sights such as Souvigny Priory and its gardens, exhibitions and adjoining woodland. Heritage hunters should also track down a day at the fortress town of Hérisson and its 14th-century castle remains and stacks of old houses. Also well worth a day trip is Apremont/Apremont-sur-Allier (40 minutes' drive) and the gardens around its 16th-century château, and Nevers (55 minutes), with 15th-century ducal palace and cathedral dating back to the sixth century.
