- Simple site with kayak hire on Lake Lleu Lleu
- Hiking, horse riding, fishing and watersports from the site
- Within half an hour's drive of forest walks and the Pacific coast
Pack your paddles and your fishing rods and get ready for chilled times in Chile… Camping y Cabañas LikanTur is right by the waters of Lake Lleu Lleu, hailed as one of the purest lakes in Latin America and with endless opportunities for kayaking, fishing and the simple art of splashing about.
This Bío Bío province site has kayaks to hire, so you can head directly out onto the clear waters to land trout and salmon and cook a fresh fish feast alfresco on barbecues and campfires back at base. If the fish aren't biting or you're less keen on eating them, the site is under five minutes' drive from a small supermarket and a restaurant serving specialities of Chile’s indigenous Mapuche people, whose heartland this is.
When you feel it’s time to shake a leg and burn off some of that filling regional nosh, you’ll only need to stroll down to the lake for active stuff like windsurfing, sailing and swimming. If anyone small is wearying of the waters and wants some time back at base, there’s a kids' playground and table tennis to keep them out of mischief.
Hikes and horse rides make a good alternative way to see the lake, its hilly surrounds and proud indigenous communities, with stopoffs to snack on Mapuche munchies like enormous sauteed pine nuts in smoky merkén sauce, sour green plums and the local tipple, chica.

Local attractions
You could probably gaze at the view from Camping y Cabañas LikanTur until the sun sets, but when you’re ready for a change of scene, the sea, or rather the Pacific Ocean, is suitably close. The little fishing village of Quidico is 15 minutes’ drive away, with fish restaurants, wild beaches and walks to the lighthouse while looking out for migrating whales.
For a sea trip of your own, take a boat from Tirua 30 minutes away to Isla Mocha: after around 15 minutes on the waves you'll be wandering a landscape of quiet green hills and white sand beaches that’s popular with sea fishers, walkers and fossil hunters, and full of relics from the pre-Colombian past. Walks and horse treks inland can be had at Contulmo Natural Monument (50 minutes), a trail-filled forest preserve where stands of ancient araucaria trees lead to a crashing waterfall.
If you’re after a dash of culture to go with all that nature, the Mapuche Museum in Cañete (30 minutes) explains the life, beliefs and history of Chile’s largest indigenous group, in the town where colonial expansion was decisively curbed in a 16th-century conflict. In Contulmo (50 minutes), the houses and public buildings, street names and sauerkraut-filled menus provide a walking history tour of German immigration to these parts.
