Rent a mountain bike in Mallnitz, get out on one of the several circular trails that start in the town and you'll have chiselled calves in no time. Struggling to get a handle on those hills? Electric bikes can be hired and recharged on site. Skiers, snowboarders and sledders who are here when the mountain peaks are capped with snow are within a 10-minute drive of Ankogel, a small-scale, family-friendly resort with two cable cars, three lifts and pistes aplenty to accommodate those heading downhill. Austria may not be the first place that springs to mind when planning a beach holiday, but it can certainly be done. True, you'll be swimming in Lake Millstatt (30 minutes' drive), a thoroughly freshwater affair, but the crystal-clear water and spotless beaches easily make up for the lack of sand and salt. If you're all (and understandably) tired out by this point, skip the dip and grab a movie at Spittal an der Drau cinema (35 minutes).
