  • Freshwater West Beach 10 minutes’ drive; Tenby 35 minutes
  • Wheelchair-friendly showers; hot tub; free-range eggs for sale
For a camping holiday that’s all about wide open spaces, head to south-western Wales and Penny Bridge Campsite, a pop-up spot on a family-run working farm a 10-minute drive from Pembroke. The ‘wide open spaces’ here refer to both the grass pitches (on vast, well-maintained and securely fenced fields) and the general surroundings, with the attractions of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park only 15 minutes away. The owners pride themselves on having made the site accessible to disabled guests, with step-free access to the toilet block and a wheelchair-accessible walk-in shower. There is also a hot tub that you can book for 30-minute sessions, plus a washing-up area and a communal fridge freezer where you can store your barbecue goodies (sourced in Pembroke) or the eggs you might have purchased right here on site, made daily by happy, free-range chickens. If you fancy a night off from cooking duties, the nearest pub serving food is less than half a mile away, in the village of Hundleton (a 10-minute walk along the B4320). Local hiking areas include Holyland Wood (10 minutes), an area of woodland and reedbeds where you might spot woodpeckers, otters and dragonflies. But the main draw is the Pembrokeshire Coast, of course, whether you wish to walk along its clifftop trails or explore beaches like sandy Freshwater West (10 minutes), with vegetation-covered dunes and shallow rockpools that ought to keep the kids busy as they look for wee marine creatures.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: the fact that we could use our portable firepit and have a multi pitch, with two large tents, the field was very clean and tidy, the camping area was well looked after, the grass cut, the sights and sounds of the animals and birds in the field opposite. Sue the owner was very pleasant and gave us lots of advise on the local surrounding area. my son loved the trip

Disliked: camp seemed a bit far out from pleases, but if you have a vehicle you wan visit Fresh Water Beach. there isn't really a local shop. there is only one toilet and one shower, hot running water at the back of the shower block was ok but all of it could better, we had some noise from other male group who had been drinking all night, only having fun but when it got to 3.30am and waking my young son, maybe more rules are needed,

Local attractions

Among the highlights of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park are the Green Bridge of Wales, a dramatic natural arch, and the limestone Stack Rocks (both 15 minutes’ drive), where you might spot nesting guillemots and herring gulls. From there, follow the coastal path to Saint Govan’s Chapel, built into the cliff. Animal experiences at Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (30 minutes) include feeding giraffes, lions or goats, and meeting cute sloths. There are also vintage rides such as dodgems and chair-o-planes, plus a Ferris wheel from the top of which you can see as far as the coast. Between the two sandy beaches at Tenby (35 minutes) are St. Catherine’s Island, a tidal outcrop topped by a 19th-century fort; and Castle Hill, with the ruins of a Norman fortress and the Tenby Museum and Art Gallery, which displays paintings and maritime artefacts. Also here is an RNLI station where you can watch the lifeboat slide down a steep slipway into the sea.
