Rainbolts Hill Farm: Aerial view

General

  • Spacious family-run park with sea views over St Brides Bay
  • A mile from Newgale beach for surfing and other watersports
  • Farm shop on site; pub 20 minutes' walk away

Surfing, hiking, horse riding, coasteering, wildlife spotting… if it’s fresh-air frolics you’re after, the Pembrokeshire coast is a pretty fab pick. And if sea-view sunsets would top that all off nicely, you’ll settle in well at Rainbolts Hill Farm.

From this family-run four-acre site there are stunning views out over St Brides Bay, best taken in at the end of the day as the sun dips below the horizon… Naturally, that’s a fab time to crack open a beer and sizzle a few sausages too; barbies are welcome here and there's a farm shop on site selling top-notch local food and craft beers. For more supplies, decent-sized supermarkets are 10 minutes' drive away in Haverfordwest. Welsh weather not all that warm? Cosy up at the cracking country pub 15 minutes' stroll away.

Having seen the sea from the site, you’ll no doubt want to take a closer look, and this is a fine location to do so. A 20-minute ramble will take you to the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, and the beaches of Newgale, Nolton Haven and Broad Haven are all under 15 minutes away by car. Turn and face inland and you’ll be looking at the Preseli Hills, also a fine place for a scenic hike.

However you’ve spent your day, back at base you’ll be staying at a peaceful place (no parties, please) with heaps of space to chill out, as well as top-notch heated bathroom blocks (ladies' and gents', with toilets and showers) to keep everyone spruced up.

Please note

A charge of £0.20 ($0.35) applies for the use of the shower.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Booking in was very straight forward, Facilities were very clean and centrally located. Owners very helpful. Gorgeous views of the coast from the top field (where we pitched). We were allowed to pitch where we liked (to be fair there were very few people on the site as it wasn't in school hols). Walks straight from the site into open country and onto coastal path- great for dogs. We didn't find the road obtrusive at all. The site was really spacious and quiet. I liked the fact that a small charge was made for showers in order to ensure water usage was controlled and that this also meant it was efficient and environmentally aware. Even though we had heavy rain, the pitch seemed to drain quite well. Guest wifi was really good. Would certainly stay at the site again if in the area.

    Disliked:

Because it was very windy when we were there the wind turbine did hum at a pitch which my pitch/noise sensitive daughter found difficult but I rather liked the alternative energy usage.

Nice views across the bay to St David’s and the few staff I saw were nice.

    Disliked:

The flies, there were thousands of them and both I and my neighbour were plagued by them.
Then there was the wind turbine, exceedingly noisy and was only drowned out by the rain hammering down on my tent.

The view was good, the fields were mainly flat and it was easy to find

    Disliked:

There were not nearly enough amenities for the amount of people on the campsite during a bank holiday weekend
The showers were often dirty and there was nowhere to put your bag or belongings down in the shower cubicle when showering.
The bin was too small as well so was always full

This is a large site with plenty of space for games/kites etc. The staff are friendly and helpful. We experienced no antisocial behaviour and the site was quiet after 11pm.
The Victoria Inn (5-10 min walk) had superb food and beer. Wifi was very good where we camped.

    Disliked:

The facilities were inadequate for the number of campers on a bank holiday weekend. There were queues for the toilets (some of them double as showers). A few portaloos in the 'overflow' field would have been welcome. There were only two washing up stations, also resulting in queues.
The toilets regularly ran out of toilet paper so take your own otherwise you will lose your place in the queue. The staff quickly replaced when informed.
The site is next to a fairly busy and fast road so there is some road noise. That said, it didn't keep us awake.

Local attractions

Watersports on your Welsh wishlist? Bring your surfboard to Newgale beach to join the regulars, or hire kit if you’re travelling light. Those who haven’t quite mastered the art yet can sign up for surf and kitesurfing lessons here, or join sea kayaking, paddleboarding or coasteering tours.

If you're after something a little more leisurely, the family-friendly sands of Broad Haven beach are about 15 minutes’ drive away, or you could don your boots for a ramble along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. Pony rides, lessons and beach or country canters are all on the menu at the local riding stables, 10 minutes away.

St Davids, 20 minutes away, is worth a jaunt too: the UK’s smallest city is famed for its cathedral and independent shops, and it’s also the meeting point for boat trips to spot wildlife around Skomer and Ramsey islands (bring the binoculars and keep the peepers peeled for puffins and dolphins).
