  • Adventure-focused stays at an activity centre in the Brecon Beacons
  • Off the Pontsticill reservoir within 15 mins’ drive of Merthyr Tydfil
  • Gorge walking, paddleboarding, climbing and caving organised from site
It’s all go go go at Parkwood Outdoors Dolygaer, in the south of the Brecon Beacons National Park with an activity centre specialising in getting folk out into the open air… adventures range from gorge walking, paddleboarding and climbing to caving, kayaking and bushcraft at this spot surrounded the Welsh hills. Being in the Beacons, the site’s also rather pretty: it sits off the Pontsticill reservoir in one of Wales’ most naturally lush areas. That’s not to say it’s in the middle of nowhere, however – a couple of pubs are about a five-minute drive away, with a couple more five minutes further. The nearest shop is less than 10 minutes away, and it's also 20 in the car to the former industrial town of Merthyr Tydfil for restaurants, bowling and a cinema. If you’d rather stick to soaking up the scenery, rent bikes from the site and set off on the trails of BikePark Wales at the Gethin Woodland Centre a 25-minute drive away or head off to hike one of Wales' most well-known peaks, Pen y Fan, under an hour by foot. (You can also practise archery and build rafts at this park, for restful times afterwards.) For a gentler way to see the sights, the Brecon Mountain Railway starts 10 minutes’ drive away on its run north from Pant along the whole of the Pontsticill reservoir, then on to the Pentwyn reservoir before stopping in Torpantau… and with excellent views the whole way.

Reservoir View primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Camp site location was excellent (weather was not so great during our trip, but that's not there fault). Excellent range of onsite activities, staff were friendly and helpful. Washing up area very close, and free ranging sheep on the site. Fire pit for each pitch. Hiking in the area was great. My boy enjoyed the little play area and rope swing.

We tried gorge walking whilst there which was a lot of fun. He also took part in digital disconnection. Despite standing up paddle boarding being cancelled due to the weather, he said he would like to do it again. He had a lot of fun.

We really enjoyed our stay, and hope to return next year.

Disliked The only thing I could pick on would be the shower facilities. When large groups are camping or activities busy, the shower area is difficult to use/can get messy. You just have to pick your times right to use the area. For me it was a small problem.

Liked Good shower facilities with lockers, EV charging on site, staffed reception with shop, friendly staff, WiFi, level pitches, nearby walks around the reservoir.

Reservoir View primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Lovely flat pitches
Great views
WiFi but was a little temperamental in parts of the site but most definitely better than nothing.
Fire bins provided

Disliked Campers bathrooms ie toilets and showers a heck of a trek from the camp pitches and the facilities were mucky and didn't seem to be cleaned on any of the days we were their.

The bins were not emptied and the pile got ridiculous
To the point it was obstructing the fire extinguisher point.

From the manager: Dear Reviewer,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on your recent stay. We appreciate you highlighting the lovely flat pitches, great views, and the availability of Wi-Fi.

I wanted to address a couple of points you raised in your review. Regarding cleanliness, while the weekend's bad weather certainly presents challenges in keeping facilities spotless, I can assure you that cleaning was carried out at least twice daily throughout your stay. Unfortunately, muddy footprints can quickly give a different impression, despite our cleaning efforts.

Concerning the bins, we acknowledge that the main bin was quite full due to the bank holiday. However, all other bins around the site were emptied daily.

Finally, in response to your comment about the distance to the shower block, we do have two distinct camping areas. The streamside pitches, where you stayed, are indeed in a beautiful, secluded location close to the river but are further from the facilities. For a shorter walk to the shower block, our Reservoir view camping spots are located closer and also offer stunning panoramic views. We encourage guests to consider this option when booking if proximity to the facilities is a priority.

We hope you otherwise enjoyed the location and value for money during your stay and perhaps might consider our Reservoir view pitches for a future visit.

Sincerely,

The Dolygaer Team

Reservoir View primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Good location for what we wanted.
Great value for money.
Was in own tent but other accommodation looked very good. Pitch was level, with bench and table, but very hard ground so need good pegs.
Good customer service, friendly staff.
Lots of things for the children to do.
Good fire pits on every pitch.

Disliked Due to all the scouts and cubs etc. Would have been better from my view, is an adult shower / toilet area.
Could have bigger bins as they were overflowing and not emptied enough.
WiFi was poor signal, hard to connect, and have to join it every hour as you get kicked out of it. But on this. I'm not bothered about Internet.

Stream Side primitive grass tent campsite

Liked I stayed at the Streamside Pitches which was down the hill from the main facilities and more expensive pitches.

This was a beautiful location with very friendly staff and nice camping facilities. While the toilets were a good walk up the hill, they were clean with nice warm showers. While I didn't use them, the provision of wheelbarrows was a nice touch.

I love coming to this part of the world and will keep this on the shortlist of places to stay (although I might treat myself to a pitch closer to the main facilities)

Disliked The portaloos halfway up the hill were very unappealing and I just walked a little bit further to the main toilets that were clean and pleasant.

Well worth staying for walking Pen y Fan

Stream Side primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Reservoir view camping has lovely views. Campsite is in a wonderful location for walking straight from it, lots of activities to do like zip line and canoeing if you want something else as part of your holiday.

Disliked Toilets and showers are very chaotic at times as it is a children’s activity centre.

Local attractions

Keen on investigating south Wales' industrial heritage? Set off to Cyfarthfa Castle (20 minutes’ drive) for a mansion belonging to the Crawshays, the family who owned the old Cyfarthfa Ironworks, or head further (45 minutes) to the aristocratic Bute clan's Castell Coch, a fairytale building designed by architect William Burgess. Visitors to the area can also turn back time to the 1600s at the National Trust’s Tredegar House (50 minutes) while meandering around a Charles II-era mansion and gardens. Treat yourself to a tipple afterwards as a reward for being so cultural at the Penderyn Distillery Visitor Centre, where tastings of the famed Welsh whisky as well as chocolate-making classes can be had 25 minutes’ drive from the park. If the wild’s where you want to be, Horseshoe Falls in the Beacons is 40 minutes’ drive away for walks beside water, and the popular market towns of Crickhowell and Brecon are the same distance if you’d rather ply pretty high streets. For fab scenery a little further on, Sirhowy Valley Country Park is 50 minutes away.
