General

  • Adventure-focused stays at an activity centre in the Brecon Beacons
  • Off the Pontsticill reservoir within 15 mins’ drive of Merthyr Tydfil
  • Gorge walking, paddleboarding, climbing and caving organised from site

It’s all go go go at Parkwood Outdoors Dolygaer, in the south of the Brecon Beacons National Park with an activity centre specialising in getting folk out into the open air… adventures range from gorge walking, paddleboarding and climbing to caving, kayaking and bushcraft at this spot surrounded the Welsh hills.

Being in the Beacons, the site’s also rather pretty: it sits off the Pontsticill reservoir in one of Wales’ most naturally lush areas. That’s not to say it’s in the middle of nowhere, however – a couple of pubs are about a five-minute drive away, with a couple more five minutes further. The nearest shop is less than 10 minutes away, and it's also 20 in the car to the former industrial town of Merthyr Tydfil for restaurants, bowling and a cinema.

If you’d rather stick to soaking up the scenery, rent bikes from the site and set off on the trails of BikePark Wales at the Gethin Woodland Centre a 25-minute drive away or head off to hike one of Wales' most well-known peaks, Pen y Fan, under an hour by foot. (You can also practise archery and build rafts at this park, for restful times afterwards.)

For a gentler way to see the sights, the Brecon Mountain Railway starts 10 minutes’ drive away on its run north from Pant along the whole of the Pontsticill reservoir, then on to the Pentwyn reservoir before stopping in Torpantau… and with excellent views the whole way.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Entertainment and activities are available between 05/01 and 31/12.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Reception is unmanned after 5 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

The camping areas are 254m from the carpark and wheelbarrows are available to help you carry your items to your pitch.

Great place to camp. The streamside camping is a lovely spot, even if it is a bit far away from the main buildings at the bottom of the valley. The cafe serves good coffee and has Starlink Wi-Fi. Don't expect a signal in this area. Download any information you need for offline use, including Google Maps for navigation.

The location is absolutely beautiful! With rolling hills, nearby stream, and the reservoir around the corner this is truly a stunning site. There are an abundance of activities in and around the area, most are within 30 minutes drive. The staff were also incredibly friendly and helpful. The facilities are clean and well maintained with good water pressure. Wifi is only available at the reception which is a nice breakaway from technology. The site is also dog friendly.

    Disliked:

The campsite is quite sloped in certain areas so ensure you get a spot closer to the stream. The staff members gave completely different information. On our first day we were told that we can hire a canoe by ourselves, and on the second day this was apparently no longer available since they were booked out. This turned out to be completely untrue with all the canoes simply sitting unused for the entire day! Due to inaccurate information we missed our chance for this activity.

The stream side location was great! A very quiet area with beautiful scenery of the surrounding hills and woods. Also, had drinking water and washing up station very close to the pitch.

Great that they let you have fire pits, really makes the stay that more special when you can stay outside around a camp fire to keep warms

Very close to Blaen-y-glyn Waterfalls, which I would highley recommend checking out for a small walk and a dip if your brave enough!

    Disliked:

The stream side pitch is not ideal if you have a lot of luggage and items with you or if you have mobility issues. As the car park is at the top of a hill and you have to carry all of your belongings from there down to the pitch. However, if you ask nicely they may let you drive your car half way down to reduce the trip. Therefore, if you do stay here, make sure you pack light!

Some of the pitches on the far side of the site aren’t that level which can be a bit awkward for cooking. However the ones by the stream are completely fine.

Toilet blocks are quite a walk away, all up hill and could do with a refurb as they are not very clean.

The non-electric streamside camping spot was fantastic value for money and so scenic. A very natural Welsh feel to it with a nice open field for you to either setup shop alongside the water of further inland should you prefer a more peaceful experience. The shower and toilet facilities were clean and spacious with brilliant warm strong flowing water to keep you clean. Also the reception/cafe offered plenty of outdoor sitting space should you wish to connect to the wifi in a bit of a dead-zone and/or sit for a bite to eat. We will return!

Lovely location next to Brecon Beacons and staff were helpful and informative. Would recommend for a weekend break for both couples and family’s. Facilities were well kept and made the experience worth the travel.

    Disliked:

Local pubs were not very friendly and offered no food on a Saturday so had to drive 20 minutes to eat out due to secluded location but other than this the experience was great.

Local attractions

Keen on investigating south Wales' industrial heritage? Set off to Cyfarthfa Castle (20 minutes’ drive) for a mansion belonging to the Crawshays, the family who owned the old Cyfarthfa Ironworks, or head further (45 minutes) to the aristocratic Bute clan's Castell Coch, a fairytale building designed by architect William Burgess.

Visitors to the area can also turn back time to the 1600s at the National Trust’s Tredegar House (50 minutes) while meandering around a Charles II-era mansion and gardens. Treat yourself to a tipple afterwards as a reward for being so cultural at the Penderyn Distillery Visitor Centre, where tastings of the famed Welsh whisky as well as chocolate-making classes can be had 25 minutes’ drive from the park.

If the wild’s where you want to be, Horseshoe Falls in the Beacons is 40 minutes’ drive away for walks beside water, and the popular market towns of Crickhowell and Brecon are the same distance if you’d rather ply pretty high streets.

For fab scenery a little further on, Sirhowy Valley Country Park is 50 minutes away.
