  • Dog-friendly touring pitches at a working farm in central Anglesey
  • Rhosneigr beach 10 minutes' drive; Beaumaris and Benllech 25 minutes
  • Horses, chickens and sheep on site; pub and shop five minutes' walk
Come for the farmyard fun – stay for the walks, beach days, watersports, family attractions… Maes Carafanau Penbryn Caravan Site is part of a working farm in the village of Gwalchmai, and it’s a fabulous spot indeed for families, couples and solo visitors alike. As you may expect from a farm, there’s lovely green scenery all around here, with paths leading directly from the site to some scenic walking and bike trails. And of course there are farm animals too – this place is home to chickens, sheep, horses and ponies. Facilities here include a play area for the kids and a dog field where visiting canines can have a good run about. There’s also a well-equipped modern bathroom block with toilets, showers, an accessible/family bathroom and a washing-up area. An Elsan point and grey waste point are also provided, and there are picnic tables for your meals (perhaps cooked on a barbecue, which you’re welcome to bring along). The village centre is five minutes’ walk away for a shop, pub and bus stop. This is a rural location, but it’s also a strategic one for getting out to explore all that Anglesey has to offer. It’s fairly central within the island, and nearby access to the A5 and A55 means that it’s easy to get to whichever attractions and activities you’d like to fill your days with – even Beaumaris, at the far eastern end of the island, is only 25 minutes’ drive away.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Children loved the play area, ball play area and the little animals to see around. As a family we loved the relaxed and friendly feeling in the camp site, the owner was so helpful when we had some trouble with the tent. The bathroom area was spotless every time we used it. Will definitely return.

Disliked Nothing.

FHU cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked I never leave reviews normally however this is one of our favourite sites on Anglesey!

The staff are great, really friendly and can’t do enough to help. It’s lovely to see them actually present on site, taking time out and chatting to other campers, not in an intrusive or checking in way, genuinely being friendly. The Saturday night, my partner asked if they could recommend a local take away, again couldn’t help enough as they had lots of different leaflets and menus for local takeaways. My teenage kids loved the Chinese after a day of paddle boarding!

The site itself is spotless, well maintained and was like this throughout the whole weekend. The toilet and shower block is kept to a high level of cleanliness, along with the dish washing bay, sinks have drainers either sides so lots of space too.

The dog park is small, however it’s clean with short grass and a secure space. My two dogs (springer and frenchie) loved the fact there is rocks and a tyre so they could run around and climb, plus the friendly sheep watching from the paddock are great.

There is a kids park and football area are slightly separated, my son was making friends playing football within 5 minutes of arriving.

Location was great for us, two minutes off the junction of the A5. My partner was sailing in Beaumaris so he was only 20mins drive, while we wanted Trearddur bay so was 15 mins away in the other direction.

Overall it’s great and location is handy, the campsite is quiet after 10pm apart from the odd dog bark or child cry (six weeks holidays so you will hear kids) we have found our new go-to site in Anglesey

Disliked There was nothing to dislike, the odd dog bark in the night of the child crying is expected in the Summer holidays. This also has no reflection in the site and would not put us off coming again.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Everything! Lovely welcome from Zoe and Iola. Really well kept site, excellent showers, spotless amenity block. Well set up for eg cycle tourists with small fridge, kettle and microwave in utility room. Our boys loved the football pitch and as our 9yo put it “they do all the simple things really well here”. We look forward to returning!

Local attractions

Anglesey is an island, of course, so the coast is always a big draw. You may like to seek out natural attractions like South Stack island (25 minutes’ drive), head to beaches like Rhosneigr (10 minutes) and Benllech (25 minutes) or take a boat ride from Beaumaris (25 minutes) to Puffin Island. For walkers, there’s always the option of a jaunt along the Anglesey Coastal Path (or part of it anyway – the whole thing is about 135 miles long). The colourful surroundings of former copper mine Parys Mountain (half an hour) are also lovely to walk through, or you could head to Newborough (20 minutes) to walk through the pine forest to the beach and out to Ynys Llanddwyn. Beaumaris Castle (25 minutes) and Plas Newydd House and Gardens (20 minutes) are top picks for historic buildings to visit; for family days out, try Pili Palas Nature World (15 minutes), Anglesey Sea Zoo (25 minutes) or GreenWood Family Park (25 minutes).
